Ryan,

Interesting project. :)

Any chance you have an old mower deck for that Cub lying around you want to get rid of ? If so what size ?

I have a 782 that I'm going to be restoring at some point and the original deck is pretty rough .....

hopefully it is fan cooled and you have some different jets for the carborator because it isnt winter.

I purchased a rebuild kit for the carb yesterday, will rebuild carb today and hopefully install engine for the last time this afternoon. The carbeurator is a tillotson diaphram style with an adjustable high and low speed jet, it kinda looks like a giant chainsaw carb, as for the engine, it is a fan cooled unit. I do not forsee any jetting problems due to the variable jet style carb, though some major adjustments wiill be in order. I will try to post some more pictures in the next few days and maybe even some short video clips if this site will allow me to do that. has anyone out there ever posted video clips on TBN. ? is that allowed or possible? if so, how do I do it?

I think the power band on a 440 is about 6k and up. The clutch on mine doesn't start to grab until 4k or so. I think the biggest issue you may run into is it will overheat if run for too long at non winter temps (~10 mins). These engines like temps below freezing. Mine gets really hot at 45 degrees and that's with air blowing through the cowl at 30mph.

Sounds like a neat competition to watch.

I think the easiest way to share a video with us is to upload it at youtube.com, and then post a link to your video here.

Hello everyone, thought I would have video of tractor driving around with snowmobile engine on it by now, but have been fighting severe carb flooding problems for a couple days, put a rebuild kit in carb, and so far, it still is far from right, as it fills crankcase with gas. I have double checked all the obvious things, like the diaphram, needle actuator setting[does same thing as float height in non diaphram carb], dirt in needle valve, and leaking welch plugs, and have not found anything out of ordinary, but I must be overlooking something. removed carb tonight, and will go through it with a fine tooth comb this evening and hopefully get this thing sorted out and post some video of this thing pulling holeshots and smashing into stuff! Wish me luck!!!!

Didn't you say 18 hp limit for the demo derby? and this engine is 35 -40 hp? How's that gonna work?

Hello everyone, good news and bad news, got 440 engine running great, however tractor would not move, after scratching my head for a few minutes, I realized that the 440 rotates the opposite direction of the original kohler, which translates to no hydraulic pressure to move tractor. I have finished kicking myself for not checking this in the first place. I am not going to give up on this though, as I am determined to make it work. The way I see it , short of finding a different engine all together, I have two realistic options, change the rotational direction on the engine or turn the engine 180: in the chassis. I am going to go with the latter of the two. Both options have theyre own unique challenges, however they seem to be less with just turning it around in the chassis. This will require doing away with the recoil starter and making a entirely new coupler for the cub driveshaft, which leads to my second problem, though the 440 has provisions for a electric starter, it did not come with one when I got it, so I am going to have to do some fab work to get one of my spare briggs or kohler starters to work. I hope to have this sorted out in a month or so. Okay, now for the good news, I was able to find a free used transaxle for the murray demo mower, {the one with the green Rally brand frontend} and will swap the trannies this afternoon, so I will still be competing next weekend, just not with my secret weapon, and I will still have good quality pictures and ameature video clips of derby to post by end of next weekend,if nobody has a problem with it, I would like to post them under this thread, rather than start a entirely new one since we discussed what the derbies consisted of in this thread. Before I get started , has anyone out their got any other suggestions on how to rectify this problem, have any of you guys ever reversed the rotational direction of a 2 cycle. this one appears to fire the cylinders 180 apart. from what I can determine, I would need to remap the timing, and come up with a totaly differnt starting setup that spins engine opposit direction. Thanks for reading, looking forward to your thoughts and feedback
