If I wasn’t sure if I caused the damage I would ask the owner if I did or not. Then go from there. Not come on a forum to ask about doing a crappy repair on it.

He did just that.
It could have been done at the owners place without the owner knowing if another family member was involved in doing it.
As for coming on a forum, isn’t it so wrong to find out how to do something one is not quite familiar with as to how to accomplish.
I mean the nerve of the guy.
Who says beyond you, that the repair would be crappy?
Actually, the biggest mistake is to make the bucket stronger.
I am willing to bet a person with a little skill could make that bucket look like nothing ever happened to it.
It’s a minor injury for heavens sake.

and l would go in a different direction because of having repaired buckets way, way worse than this.
This fix is puppy doo-doo.
And if you did it to someone else’s, I’d help you fix it so you wouldn’t have to spend for a new bucket.
It’s not like replacing a hip.

My way to fix it would be to put the bucket against an
old oak tree or similar but put a 1x4x4 and attack it with
a sledge hammer start in the front and work your way back
you want the 1 by to be level with the bend and you should
be able to get it straight with some muscle

That's what I would do. Worse case is if it doesn't work out go the welding route or replace bucket.

If you have the welding equipment it would probably be best to take a grinder with cutoff wheel and cut half way through or so at the creases to make it easier to masage back to shape then reweld at those points which would get rid of the stretching effect and should be roughly as strong as new...
