best 9mm?

One of my daughter's God Fathers is USMC sniper, armorer, and gunsmith, and certified GLOCK armorer. He knows more about guns that I ever will.

I asked him what pistol I should get for open carry here on the property to use against various varmints up small bears and coyotes.
I wanted a 1911 .45 ACP. I've shot them often in the military.

He took me shopping. We went to the gun show, test fit my hand on a variety of pistols.

I went with the Taurus 24x7 Titanium 9mm (really light). As soon as I buy a second one, stainless steel for me of course, this one will become my wife's.

Lifetime warranty, excellent action and safety features. Built at the Berretta factory in Brazil that Taurus bought and retained all the staff.

It was also affordable I paid only $365 for it. It is a NICE tool.

Happy shopping! Happy Shooting!

What ever you buy;hand fit and trigger pull are most important.Heavy trigger pull leads to poor accuracy.I have owned a lot of pistols over the years. The 9mm with today's new loads are great.
My current carry guns are Springfield XD,one sub-compact in 9MM and a 4in barreled 40 S&W.Great trigger pulls on the Springfields.

Heavy trigger pull leads to poor accuracy.I.

lack of training, bad eyesight and or poor hand / eye coordination lead to poor accuracy.

A hard trigger pull is something you learn how to manage.

some one just randomly squeezing off loads jerking the gun around is not a true corelation comparison of trigger pull and accuracy.

I shoot quite a few guns with no safety, revolvers and semi-auto alike.

trigger pull IS the only real safety, not even including a de-cocker... IE.. DA/SA handuns where the first shot can be pulled off da, or DAO revolvers. Just because they have a stiff trigger pull doens't mean you ham hand them. you ease into the triggerpull, lear where the release point is and then fire accordingly, not just blazing away... :(

Each gun will feel / fit one person's hand one way and another person's hand another way.

I second this. I know the 92F with the high capacity magazine we had in the Corps fit my hand like crap. The grip was too fat and I had to sort of slide my hand around the grip some to get good trigger contact.

I have also been looking at pistols and I like the way the CZ 75B fits my hand. There is a gunstore with indoor range here that has like 20-25 rental pistols so I plan on spending some time there before deciding on which pistol to buy.

I can shoot rifles and shotguns with either hand (and without thinking twice) but have never trained myself to shoot a pistol left handed. I have toyed with the idea of getting the CZ 85B as it is the 75 with ambidextrous safety and slide release.

i'm just the opposite. I'm right handed and can shhot a pistol in my left hand 99% as good as my right.. not so with a rifle or shotgun though.

I had a Ruger Blackhawk some years back. Nice pistol, but action was rough from the factory. Had a gunsmith touch up the trigger, and do a tuneup on the action. Then, it shot like a dream. From the bench. I could hold tiny little groups at 25 yards from a sand bag. Worked up some nice handloads.

But offhand... I couldn't group for nothing. I even took a pistol class. Used the range pistol there at first; shot a tight group off hand. got mine out, and all over the target. Instructor checked me out; it was a terrible fit for me.

Around the Sacramento area, there are a couple ranges where you can rent guns. Cordova Shooting Center has a variety of pistols and rifles for rent. I would try that first if that is possible in your area.

when I took my CCW test our instructor had us do one shooting test that involved loading the clip, peeling off half the rounds in the clip then do a hand off to the other hand and keep fireing.. this was kind of 'walking the shot. IE.. a panoramic shot is if shooting at a moving target, which was really instead a marked middle section of a long 'target'.

I actually liked that one..

For me the only good 9MM is one traded in for a 45 cal. Just don't like the darn things. At the end of WW11 my uncle brought home a brand new P38 and gave it to my dad. Do know that he killed a bear with it, but what else?? He left it on a stump at the bear kill and it may still be there.

I do like wheel guns, and have Smith 45 ACP and a 32 Long Colt that is about 50 years older than I am. Sweet little gun, but I'm not much on a 32 either. Never had a wheel gun fail to fire. Can't say the same for an auto loader.

Would rather have a 22 rim fire than a 9MM or 32 Cal.

I really like 9mm ammunition. You can buy fairly cheap stuff for plinking or some really robust rounds for carry (where you want a one shot stop).

For reliability, ease of maintenance and durability, I'd suggest you look at a GLOCK 17 or 19. These fine guns are tools...not pretty unless strict functionality is your idea of beauty.
My personal favorites are Generation 1 or 2 with Hogue Handigrips. These fit my hand very well...but GLOCKS don't fit everyone's hand, so try before you buy.

For Home Defense and Personal Safety, cost of ammo should be at the very bottom of the list. For killing Paper & Cans, that's another story.

38 Cal ( 9 MM ) Copper clad round nose is a penetration round, not a stopper. That is a well know fact. Same with 38 special.

Now you can get 38 / 9 MM in flat point or hollow point. Then reliability goes down, unless its in a wheel gun.

US military had 38's before the Philippine insurrection shortly after 1900. They didn't stop the folks charging them. So they went to 45 ACP, worked well. Police dept.s had 38's didn't work out so well, went to the 45's and all was well.

Now they are back to the 38's = 9 MM and you read in the news paper or see it on TV news. Shot suspect 14 times before he would stop.:confused2:

Most shots in home defense are less than 25 feet, most a lot closer. So accuracy is not a big deal either. Stick with your shotguns and buck shot or slugs after the first 2 shots.
