best 9mm?

For Home Defense and Personal Safety, cost of ammo should be at the very bottom of the list. For killing Paper & Cans, that's another story.

38 Cal ( 9 MM ) Copper clad round nose is a penetration round, not a stopper. That is a well know fact. Same with 38 special.

Now you can get 38 / 9 MM in flat point or hollow point. Then reliability goes down, unless its in a wheel gun.

US military had 38's before the Philippine insurrection shortly after 1900. They didn't stop the folks charging them. So they went to 45 ACP, worked well. Police dept.s had 38's didn't work out so well, went to the 45's and all was well.

Now they are back to the 38's = 9 MM and you read in the news paper or see it on TV news. Shot suspect 14 times before he would stop.:confused2:

Most shots in home defense are less than 25 feet, most a lot closer. So accuracy is not a big deal either. Stick with your shotguns and buck shot or slugs after the first 2 shots.

You're trying to turn this discussion of 9mm firearms into a caliber war...please stop.
Donn12 (the OP) has expressed interest in buying a 9mm. If you can post something pertinent to the topic, do so...just drop the .45 ACP push.

BTW, my GLOCKs feed both hardball and hollowpoints quite reliably although some semi-autos do have trouble with hollow points (regardless of the caliber...and that includes .45 ACP). The only misfire I've ever had was with a reload (ball ammo, BTW).

I believe more people (civilians) are killed each year with a .22LR than any other round.

You can use a .44 Magnum, but if you can't hit your target, the caliber won't matter.

The FBI killings in Miami started the whole "the 9mm isn't enough" debate, but the fact is the good guys came across some determined men and the "luck" of the situation wasn't on the good guys side. That fact seems to be lost on people.

I shoot pretty much all calibers, and my most favorite caliber is the gun that is by my side.

As mentioned, try before you buy. One gun may feel good in the hands, but another may feel great. Felt recoil is something else you can try before you buy as well. Generally speaking, the lighter the gun, the more felt recoil (given the caliber is the same).

The 92FS is a great gun, but don't buy it just because it's military issue. That's a whole other topic unto itself LOL

Yeah...I've read those reports. Although the 9mm round did get an undeserved bad reputation out of that gunfight, there was a silver lining. Since then, there have been some fantastic 9mm ammo developed.

I normally use Speer Gold Dot for carry ammo, but I like Hornady Critical Defense too (first tried the Critical Defense in a Ruger LCP since I wanted a round that had some "omph" to it as well as feed reliably...I was so impressed, I bought it in 9mm too).

I've had a chance to shoot a bunch of different 9mm pistols, and the Beretta M9 was my favorite of all of them.

Glock 9mm, Springfield XD9, or Ruger SR9c.

If u really wanna stop the bad guys Mossberg combat shotgun or Ruger Mini 14 with hollow points.

I very much agree with Roy Jackson on the fact that the current offerings in 9mm ammo are way better than ever before. I also like the Speer Gold Dots but have a pretty good stock of Federal HydraShocks. As to what gun, all a mater of preference.

I own Glocks (8 of them), Sigs (7 of them) several 1911's a few Berreta's and others. I think the Glocks are very easy to shoot. Maybe due to the flat wide slide or the white outline sights. It just seems I can hand one to a newer shooter and they can make hits better than the other brands. For me it's not that big a deal since I have been shooting all my life and have shot competition on a national level. I carry Glocks but love to shoot my Sigs and my Berretta 92FS as much as the high end 1911's.

You will probably end up with more than one any way, so it's just a matter of what order you buy them in. :D

I've fired a few different ones. I own a Ruger P89. They are pretty inexpensive and I've been happy with mine. The one I've fired and like the best was a Smith and Wesson. Of the choices you listed, I'd also buy the Berreta. My favorite is a Kimber in 45 ACP, it shoots better than me.

I've fired a lot of different automatics in handguns and rifles over the years, and they have all jammed at least once, except for one. Its a Ruger Ranch Rifle in 223 and it is the only one that hasn't jammed at least once. My point is, if its for self defense, I'd look at a wheel gun.

Ruger ranch rifle = Mini 14

Super reliable gun with the very potent 223 round.

for many years I had a berretta model 92s yes s not f, it was made in Italy not MA. It was the pedesessor to the military issue. It was the most accurate 9mm I had ever shot or owned. It never jammed or missfired, I put military issue ammo, all different kinds of store bought, hollow point, fmj, rn lead, and even 162grn cast swc with gas check.
It has traveled with me from British Cloumbia to the Carabians to north Africa and as far north as Tromso Norway.
For those of you who know what IPSC is I used the 162 grn swc to acheve major power factor without a problem. When I sold it I figured that I wanted something better and have yet to find it. Looks like the buyer got the best of that deal.
In short as far as I am concerned it was the best 9mm ever! Sorry I let it go.
If you can find a pre military issue Itallian made 92s grab it and if you know of anyone in Canada who has one that is for sale let me know.
PS I achived major only by carefully working up my own load (been reloading rifle and pistol since mid 70's) And I have used the 92f and it is a fine gun but, as far as I am concerned it is not the same quality as the old Itallian model.

Watch out tho.

Once you buy one you will buy another

and another

and another

and then it is too hard to choose a favorite.

Then you may have to move from revolvers to semi autos or vice versa

Berettas are manufactured in Maryland (MD), not Massachusetts (MA)
