That said, the most favorite, fun, accurate gun I own to shoot in a 9 is the BHP. As I've gotten older though, I've gotten away from single action semi's for primary carry, and a single action carried in condition 1 wouldn't be my first suggestion to a person looking for their first sidearm.[/QUOTE]

Sig, what would you recommend?

our ccw trainer told us something similar. he was a leo trainer.. told us we should not think about carrying if, right now, we had -ANY- qualms about possibly shooting another human being in a defensive situation. ANY at all... because.. once you carry.. you are in that position...

I don't agree with that mentality, I have alot of qualms about shooting another human being, I would really have to be forced into it, but I'm still comfortable carrying a gun.

I'm pretty sure I could do it if forced to, but I'll bet there are some armed citizens that could not engage a human target. I still think being armed, they have a better chance to get out of a bad situation than if they were unarmed.

One thing you can not predict is how you will react in a crisis. The 3 times I had to go hot, I fumbled and stumbled gripped in fear and confusion. luckily none ended with the need to discharge my weapon.

That's why LEO's are trained and retrained so they rely on that instinct and don't have to over analyse.

There's a lot of situations that a gun will save you without having to shoot AT someone.

I was involved in 3 situations where I needed to use a gun. One was just to show it and the situation instantly diffused. One camping in the boonies in my van when I was younger someone was attempting to enter the van. I rolled down the opposite window and shot once in the air, after that I heard nothing but footsteps running away.
Another time at the house, my barking waking me up, bad guys throwing a large rock to kill and quiet the dog as they attempted to climb the fence. Another round into the ground and I heard OK MAN WE'RE leaving.

So could I kill someone, you betcha, would I do other things first if I had the time, absolutely.

All I know is there were three times in my life that could have turned only bad for me had I not had a gun.

Having a gun does not automatically make you decide between if you will or will not kill someone, but as others have said you better be prepared if all else fails.

I have since purchased a starting pistol that resides right next to my gun. If the situation warrants then I will use the "noise maker". I even tell the wife when I'm gone, if you hear anything funny use the gun and blow a hole in the ceiling to scare the bad guys away.

Any bad guy that sticks around after hearing a round goes off is really insane.

Sig, what would you recommend?

Why a Sig of course:D

P239 in a 9 IMO is a nice concealable sidearm. Do however know and feel comfortable with the action you're getting in a Sig if you do consider one (25 years ago, it was simple, the gun was black, you had like 4 models, and they were all double action first round, single action after that).

As mentioned, try to find a gun range that will let you rent out guns to shoot them. What's nice for one person isn't so nice for another, and anything I or anyone else suggest for a gun may not be as "good" for you.

For myself, I have small hands. I love my Glock 20 in 10mm (the caliber is remarkable IMO, one reason why I bought the gun), but I needed to send it out for a grip reduction so it would feel more comfortable in my hands. With the 92 FS, I actually like the Vertec model better as well just because of the smaller grip.

I'm more of a "steel gun kind of guy" over a "plastic gun", but that is an opinion only.

Again, only opinion, but don't let anyone tell you that a 9mm isn't enough. The most important aspect IMO for owning a sidearm is practice, practice and more practice (I sold a 4" .44 Mag because I couldn't hit the broadside of a barn). The 9mm is fun to shoot, ammo is on the less expensive side compared to other larger calibers, and with the ammo selection they have out now, as mentioned, good defensive ammo there.

Just one other note, just remember, if you have 7 rounds or 15 sitting in the mag, doesn't really matter how many rounds you have if you can't hit your target (I'd take a 6 round wheel gun over an ill fitted hi cap semi auto any day).

I do remember Taurus having a 9mm revolver that caught my eye one day LOL

I know where is he coming from. I trained and taught Karate for many years, and I think I am still pretty good - but some of the most effective self defense actions are not reversible. I mean like breaking knees and elbows and such - the right mind set, that you are ready to really hurt the attacker can save your life or limbs. But I was never sure I have it, like a little switch that comes on when you realize life is at stake - and go berserk.

Using the gun is similar.

Sig,

Thank you for saying that!

I went to the single most lethal guy I know. His job for many years was to test new sniper rifles, and he is the weapons trainer and armorer for a major US Govt agency, plus he is a USMC sniper, and a gunsmith & optics designer.

He knows guns.

I was convinced from all I read I needed a .45 acp and that a 9mm was a pea-shooter.

He convinced me that #1 lethality is MUCH more about proper use of the tool, than the size of the bullet, and that the #2 feature was comfort/ease of use. I am convinced this 9mm I bought (Tarus 24x7 Titanium) will totally "Git-er done" if ever I need it. I am also convinced it will be VERY effective in my wife's hands as well.

There are MANY more important things to consider than just the caliber of the buillet.

He is a big Sig and Glock fan, but the Taurus was the best option for me that day at the gun show...

Soundguy,

Amen!

A pistol is a tool. A single purpose tool, and it is NOT punching holes in paper targets. A hunting rifle or a shotgun it can be argued have multiple purposes, like hunting for example, but a pistol is for killing, and mostly for killing other people, and at close range (Danger Close by definition).

No gun is ever a toy. They are a tool, and their use is fairly staightforward.

'Nuff said...

Be well sir!

ditto on getting out an shooting alot. the only gun I have ever sold was a heavy 9mm that beat the tar out of my hand... worse than any 44 mag or .357..

get out.. get friends with guns and go to ranges.. shoot alot.. then make a purchase.

great advice.

On reason to go out and try a bunch of guns of different calibers to see which one you may like best.

For myself, I have a .357 and a .40, but honestly, the .45 doesn't have as much "snap" that actually makes follow up shots easier (at least for myself) with a .45 over a .40 and .357

Like guns, every person is different, and what may feel nice to shoot for one person may be different for someone else to shoot.

Here's the M12 holster I was referring to, for the M9 or 92.
It has a cleaning rod tucked in and of course is ambidextrous, also has the lanyard and clip.

The beretta is more suited to a duty holster in IMO, An excellent proven combat pistol, but a little bulky to slip in the pants waistband comfortably.
