The best gun is the one that reliably goes bang. Anything else is extra.

What is the best gun is like what is the best oil.

The best gun is one of each one.

Or, none at all.

An important consideration is how the gun fits you and how it shoulders. When I bought my current turkey gun I headed to the store having done the research set to buy a Browning semi auto NWTF 12 ga. I left with a Benelli because it fit me. My point is spend some time shouldering a gun before buying.

All of my Pump shotguns...12 ga and 20 ga. have the plugs in the tubes...anyone know how I can safely take those plugs out so I can load more shells...I googled it but it was not clear to me...I realize there is a spring in there and I know without trying that you better know what you are doing before disrupting a spring or I may never get it back it...Help please...I have an old JC higgins 12 ga. and an Ithica 12 ga.. Thanks..

Brin, make sure it is unloaded and open the action fully.unscrew the endcap of the magazine tube. notice a sheetmetal cap inside the tube, it is a friction fit to the inside diameter of the magazine tube, take a screwdriver or other blunt instrument and pry straight out without bending the sheetmetal. Be careful because the spring pressure is pushing on the plug and this inside cap. The plug will be either wooden or plastic "stick" remove it an put it away in case you want to make the gun legal again for birdhunting. While the spring is out inspect it for rust and lightly oil it. also upend the shotgun and hold on to the barrel as it will slide right out also now, and the forearm (wooden or polymer pump section) will come of now also. but let the magazine spring follower slide out of the magazine tube. Note the concave side goes against the spring and convex side goes in the tube first. Anyway what I am getting at this is an excellent time to clean the magazine tube by running a lightly oiled swab thru it. Clean the barrel if you want. But you have never cleaned the tube, and now would be a good time.. Reassemble by putting in the magazine follower in the magazine tube first, then the spring, then the sheetmetal insert against the spring pressure. make sure the forearm (pump) is on if you removed it and screw the endcap back on, it will have detent ball and will tighten about so much and stop. You stop when you feel this happen.

get back to me if you have any trouble.. good luck

I think the "Chi-Ching" of the pump action alone would be best warning that the next thing is the BANG to a would-be intruder....

No need to holler out "Stop...Who goes there"

"Chi-Ching"?
"Do not move or I will perform Tai Chi on you" :D

What kinda guns you got man? Anybody knows a proper American pump goes, "Chuck-Chuck".

Those plugs are in there for a reason. So, don't take it out, if you plan to go hunting with that shotgun.

Take the end off the mag tube if its an 870 and then dump the plug out. If its a mossburg, take the barrel off and then dump it out.
There easy just take it apart you cna get it togeather. Autos not much harder but i dont know exact steps as i dont have one.

Wow, what a question.

I keep several 22lr around the house and the shop, always loaded. A 20-12 guage can do a lot of damage if you are aiming close to the chicken house, found it to be the best way to do it. I like many on this form have many other things to use for hunting, but the old 22lr is still the favorite.

That's a rural attitude. The gun I have that has disposed of the most critters is an old Springfield single shot .22. It's the only loaded gun in the house, because you have to manually cock it to fire. Everything else lives in the gun safe.
