Best all around gun?

Gosh man, does it have to be JUST ONE GUN? the .22 is hard to beat for a lot of things, but when it comes to killing 2 legged varmits, well don't get me wrong, it will work, but I sure would a lot rather have a good 12 guage pumpgun with buckshot. But for close quarters answering the door in the middle of the night, I sure would rather have a good pistol in my hand, empty that if need be at the goblin and retreat to that shotgun and continue to repel boarders if that is what it takes. Look, as you said yourself there is no ONE perfect gun. You need several, just like everyone else. I guess if I had to have ONLY one gun, I suppose it would be the 12 gauge pumpgun, with a large selection of different ammunition, no. 9 birdshot all the way to slugs. (sheesh, I hope to never have to make that choice)

Remington 870 12g shot gun. It will do everything, is cheap, never fails, and is versatile. No property should be without a shot gun.

I've got the RRA Entry Tactical...outstanding rifle and very low recoil.
Although a great home defense firearm, just not as easy to use as a pump action 12 gage. Also...for field use, you need to check your states' laws. Some states (PA, for example) restrict use of semi-auto rifles in the field.

I can't, for the life of me, understand why people worship a butt ugly AR platform and the Rock River is heavy. I know, I have one.
..and you must live on some distant planet because a .223/5.56 NATO round (22 caliber) is basically a weinie bullet. Put it up against a Moose and you'll have hoof prints on your forehead. The heaviest bullet weight you can load is 60 grains. That's it.
Great for elimination of **** Sapiens, small game and toads and an ocassional prarie dog or a deer in the open, but that's it.

In consideration of your wife and ease of operation, check out the Ruger 99/44 semi-automatic rifle with a 18 1/2 inch barrel. Light recoil, light, accurate and uses a rotary magazine(extras for easy reload) It looks very similar to a Ruger 22. Another easy to shoot and will get the job done is a Saiga 410 auto shotgun. Easy to use with low recoil.They look similar to a AK 47 and you can get fifteen round magazines for them!
