2,4-D (amine or ester formulations) is not the same as glyphosate (generic Roudup). 2,4-D is a broadleaf herbicide (although it can harm some grasses http://www.btny.purdue.edu/weedscience/2004/articles/amineester04.pdf), while glyphosate is non-selective and kills broadleaf and grass plants.

Steve is right. 2,4-D is a growth regulator type of herbicide, similar to the natural plant hormone indole acetic acid. IAA is a powerful growth regulating hormone that tells above ground parts of plants to grow upward, roots to grow down, leaves to drop at the right time and controls other functions. 2,4-D is almost the same chemically but it isn't and it induces rapid uncontrolled growth which kills the plant. Roundup (glyphosate), OTOH inhibits an enzyme involved in the synthesis of certain essential amino acids.

Let's try this again.

2,4-D comes in two formulations, amine and ester, that differ in volatility (http://www.btny.purdue.edu/weedscience/2004/articles/amineester04.pdf).

The product you listed in your earlier post, Amine 400 (2, 4-D Amine 2 1/2 Gal.) is just a particular brand of an amine formulation of 2,4-D, and is not equivalent to Crossbow. Crossbow contains both triclopyr and 2,4-D (ester).
