I can't get a quick hitch, I already got all my PTO shafts trimmed to fit the normal hitch.

How much overlap of the sliding shafts does a person need typically to handle the PTO HP safely?

PTO stub-shaft extenders are readily available for about $20.00

6" is the accepted value. In new [tight] telescoping shafts its safe to go less but as they wear over the years you can get into trouble when a short overlap causes it to get a little wobbly. It can start binding and resist the telescope action. Its not a HP issue so much as an ability of the shaft halves to remain colinear at maximum extension.

kennyd is correct about extensions. They come in different styles. Most ag dealers can get them in quick release or bolt on.

The Hub City part number is A-PA09. AgSupply should be able to get them.

1/3 of the OAL tube length should be "overlap", give or take a little.
