Should be able to mow and trim in an hour with a 48" mower deck.

Sweet! That's about how long it takes me to do the lot at my current house ( which is just over a quarter of an acre) with a push mower.

Going with the X320 with a brush guard. and probably a snowblower later.

I actually have full support from my wife to get whatever we need. She said to get whatever is going to last the longest, and doesn't mind spending a bunch of cash on it. Gotta love that. :)

You may be missing a golden opportunity that doesn't come along all that often.

You think a X3xx or X5xx will do the job? What happens if you need to lift something and don't have a FEL? What if you need to dig a hole and have no Back Hoe or Post Hole digger? What if DW needs a garden and you have no Tiller? What if you need to resurface the driveway and you have no Box Blade?

With 2 acres you NEED at least a 2320 / 2520, maybe even a 3x20 with a CAB for those COLD Rochester winter days. Ever tried to blow snow into the wind?:D

LOL.

Good suggestions, just slightly outside the budget at this time unfortunately. :)

You have minimal obstacles in the yard at the moment, so an X3xx should do fine.

You can always get a bigger rig as needs and budget allows.

Sweet. Yeah there are basically no trees there right now.

The lot next door (also in the shot) might be for sale. If I buy that, I'll need something else for sure.

What about the blower attachment on a X3xx for that driveway? It's about 150 ft long. Seems like it's the easiest option, and cheaper than putting a plow on my F150.

AJ,

This might sound contrary, but you can find used JD 200-300 & 400's on Craigslist all day long. If I go back a week I can probably find a half dozen 300 and 400's around me, some with blowers and tillers, some in really nice shape and some that seem a pretty good price.

If you're thinking 300, troll CL for while and you might be able to upgrade or get a machine with a couple attachments for a pretty good price.

Yeah I have been looking for those too. I found a 425 at the dealer in town, but he's asking $4K for it, and I don't know how something like that would compare to the modern ones?

Also found a few GX3xx's too, but wasn't sure how those compared to the modern ones.

ADJ

My father has a 1993 JD425 with a 54" mower and a 47" snowblower for a 600' steep-grade driveway. I dont consider it overkill because it could still take upwards of an hour to an hour and a quarter to clear the driveway of snow and sand the steep parts. But that estimate is dependant on if we have trouble making it back up to the house and how deep the snow is. You can move along a lot quicker when the snow is fluffy and only 2-3 inches deep than when its heavy and a foot deep.

Since you are going to be in upstate New York in direct firing line of all that lake effect snow I would consider getting something a little bigger like a JD 400 series or x500 series to handle the snow a little easier than having something smaller that might struggle to keep up. I would definately get something with at least a 54" deck. Since you have no trees a 60" or 62" would greatly reduce your cut time.

Since your property is flat you wont need 4wd. That was the mistake my father made when he bought the 425. The dealer told him he didnt need 4wd and boy were they wrong. I cant tell you how many times I slid backwards down the driveway on that tractor doing like 15mph and trying to keep it from entering the ditch and flipping. My father just purchased a JD 2305 TLB for doing projects around his house and I will probably end up with the 425. It will definately be overkill for my 1/3 acre and 50' 2-car wide driveway but hey if it only takes me 3 minutes and 25 seconds to clear it of snow then I'll be happy!

As others have been saying always get a size or 2 bigger than what you think you need. Time is money. Who would want to spend an hour and a half mowing when you are just buring all of your valuable weekend time. Get something bigger and get it done as fast as possible!

So the 400 series is rough equilivlant to the X500 series then? Is there some sort of cross reference I can check since I have found a few used GX3xx ones too? The Deere site doesn't seem to have one although I guess that makes sense.

Buying a new, bigger house and juggling all this is keeping me conservative for now. So even with full wife support, I am trying to keep my spend on this in the $4000 range for the tractor (I can worry about snow removal goodies later once the dust from buying the house settles.).
