Best diesel 5 gal fuel can?

I did this and it works out great, does not spill either. DOT didnt on the other hand, took the cans, and i got a 500 dollar ticket over it. If your doing any kind of commercial work, just deal with the crappy cans they have now, or get a transfer tank.

All my cans are the old style, but my two Diesel cans had a very small vent (work much better now). ~~ grnspot

Thumnails show five-gallon metal Type II fuel cans purchased from Amazon in April 2012. Both made in the USA. I prefer the yellow JUSTRITE can, primarily for its 1" metal filler hose. Also its fuel release lever works a little better for me and the can is of heavier construction overall. On Amazon's site EAGLE states its filler hose is 7/8" OD....but who cares about outer diameter? Fuel flows through the inner diameter.

Fuel flows from the JUSTRITE can significantly faster.

Above noted they are both excellent products that will last longer than your lifetime. Both are well vented.

The Eagle gas can was $67; Justrite $71, free shipping, NO SALES TAX.

Polypropylene five-gallon containers are $15-20 and you will have to buy replacement spouts from time-to-time @ $6-$7.....and the "NEW" plastic fuel containers are tedious to use.

Purchasing fuel cans is one of those times it is worth paying more $$ for quality.

But the biggest issue is that we have a bunch of 'boneheads' in DC , that wouldn't know the first thing about a fuel can..............dictating what you and I need to do.

I use the military jerry can. I have several of the actual military cans that are made by Scepter in canada. They are amazing cans, and they do not leak a drop, and I can pour about 5 gallons from the can in about 2 minutes. I would highly recomend a jerry style can, and the all metal version can be purchased from sportsmansguide for $25 with a regular, old style funnel. They have great reviews..

As I read the page at Sportsman's Guide, the can is $25.17 by itself, then you need to buy the filler separately for $7.17; total $32.34 + shipping, so cans arrive at your door at about $40.

The reviews appear to have been edited (censored?) by the vender.

I would like to know the weight of the 5-gallon can. Those clamshell welds raise questions too. Are these can solid?

I would like to know where cans are manufactured. Nothing indicates Canadian production. I prefer to buy North American.

These cans are interesting if the quality is there.

These are a bit pricey, and the tubeless tire valve stem does work great; only thing is to be sure you do not use the ones made of butyl rubber, as petroleum products will deteriorate them, causing tiny pieces of rubber to wind up in the can.

In our area, the metal cans tend to start rusting if you do not keep them full, for this reason, I do prefer plastic.

if you add a vent to a modern can then you've defeated the purpose of the no-spill spout that they come with. these generally have the vent built into the spout so that you can't overfill (the vent becomes blocked when the tank is full).

The first thing I usually do, is whack off the vent stuff, and fill the holes with silicon to turn them into a regular spout.

I have an easy solution for the gas vent and epa spouts. Go on eBay and buy a new spout from canada. They don't have the regulations, and will ship to the US. I just bought one, and as long as you are not using the can for comercial operations that can be inspected, you will be fine. Mine works great. It is a scepter spout, that I attached to a scepter can, that I bought with the EPA spout attached. The new spout from canada works just like the old ones, if not better.

I have a few of these 5 gal. fuel cans in yellow color, they are heavy duty, won't rust, don't leak, & pour fast, but they won't pass the DOT spill proof regulation. They work for us on our small place. I reccommend getting the fill hose attachment. You can get colors to match your tractor, even though I got the standard diesel yellow.
