Sig-
That is a confederate soldier - I live about 2.5 hours east of Gettysburg and get to visit it several times a year. Many brave americans died there fighting for both the north and south (including North Carolinians at Oak ridge). I am always amazed how those guys faced point blank rifle and cannon fire from large sized projectiles (50 to 69 caliber bullets and cannister shot the size of a golfball). -Mike

Can't safely fire 5.56x45 in a .223, but you can safely fire .223 in a 5.56x45 stamped weapon. Pressure differences being the cause.

AK47 rounds are 7.62x39mm. NOT the same round as .308, not by a longshot. .308 is approx. 7.62x51mm. Your buddies weapons probably don't function too well today from swapping the two. Common misconception though, don't sweat it.

I'm dredging this up only because I've got a question about it.

I've always understood the same thing that Podunk staed above: You can fire .223 remington in a 5.56x45 weapon, but you shouldn't fire a 5.56x45 in a .223 weapon.

I believe that the reverse is true of .308 vs. 7.62x51. I think that the .308 winchester is a higher pressure than the NATO round, so you can fire the 7.62 NATO in a .308 win-stamped gun, but not the other way around. (and I understand that 7.62x51 and 7.62x39 are not interchangeable at all - at least, not normally, anyway).

I got a delivery of ammunition yesterday. The Barnaul .223 had both markings on it - .223 AND 5.56x45. Would this possibly be a mistake, or just low pressure 5.56 rounds. Anybody have any thoughts on that.

Thanks and take care.

Soundguy, It just seemed that we got way off the topic real quick. I think most people realize that at close quarters and in the house a 12 gauge is the way to go, but that was not the question. Whether you have the right to fire outside of the house is another topic. A guy here in Arizona shot an intruder as he was running away and there were no issues. This also did not answer the question. And then we got into flashlights and baseball bats, well the OP's last post let us no that he has concerns that call for more protection. As for the "Annie Oakley" comment, I get the biggest kick out of those who say it only takes one well placed shot. Have you ever read reports on real shoot outs? The hit ratio is pathetic and even when the perp takes a hit it usually takes more than one to put them down. "You guys crack me up" was supposed to invoke humer. I guess I should have used smiley faces.

Couple years ago, per the FBI (for what that's worth), the "average" gunfight lasted less then three rounds.

Amazing that the .22 LR has killed more people than any other caliber, isn't it?

I'm guessing head, heart, jugular and a couple other "key" spots on the human body, if hit by a bullet, will increase the chances of death with one bullet. That said, other areas may take more than one bullet, and even then, the defense mechanisims that the human body "enacts" when shot, it would take some time for death to occur. Personally, that's why I don't care if I'm carrying a .380 or .45, and the .40 vrs 9 gets pretty old:D

when I was in the Marines we were taught that he who gets the most lead in the air the quickest usually won. I shot expert on the range with what I consider an excellent gun the M14, but we had a full week of snap-in and plenty of time to place our shots. In combat it dosn't work that way.

That's not what they teach in sniper school :D Also I think it should be the most lead on target, not in the air. :D My wife can put a lot of lead in the air....not a problem.

Hey, has anyone looked at those Marlin camp carbines? I think they are discontinued, but I stumbled on to them a week or so ago and did some reading. They looked really neat just for the fact that if you have a 1911 45, you could get a camp carbine chambered for the same round and it took the 1911 clip, too. Pretty neat in that the pistol and rifle used the same clip and ammo. The 1911 is a proven pistol. The 45 is a heavy round with plenty of knock down. Just wondering. I know little about specifics.

Where I was at the target was usually a directional thing. With the POS M16 you just started low left and let it work its way up and across. Sniper school is a whole different thing.

It's .223 ammo. I've heard it shoots well, and is much cleaner than the Wolf ammo, at nearly the same price. I was thinking about trying some. Where did you buy it?
