Best home defense gun? The one in your hand at 2AM when the back window breaks. Maybe only superseded by the one you put down to start up the backhoe at 02:15....

I gave my mom a .38 cal revolver loaded with Glaser safety slugs as she was living in an apartment building. The Glasers won't go thru 2 sheetrock walls and harm a non targeted person. She admitted that she probably couldn't shoot someone. I told her to just aim for the floor 5 foot in front of her. No criminal will stand toe to toe with a person that just cracked off a round in a small room.

From Glaser Safety Slug

For over 30 years, Glaser Safety Slug has been the perfect choice for use in populated, urban areas. Glaser's composite design uses a special thin-wall jacket, and precision compressed lead shot core with a soft polymer tip. This construction provides optimum balance between penetration and fragmentation. These round nose profile guarantees feeding reliability. Stopping power is maximized by the complete dispersal of the bullet energy into the intended target with immediate shock and trauma
This rapid fragmentation delivers the energy to a large area. Reduced recoil allows a fast recovery for follow up shots if necessary. This makes Glaser the best choice for defensive situations.
Glaser Blue penetrates five to seven inches in International Ballistic Wound Association protocol testing, while silver penetrates eight to ten inches in the IWBA testing protocol.

Blue is suggested for warmer climates where apparel is lighter making penetration easier.

Checht! That reminds me political games in old Rome. Cities full of not working proletariat and politics buying their votes with bread and games.

Not trying to draw a parallel between Rome and USA - mainly because it is not necessary.

Just remember that is not only Big Strong guys like yourself that could drop the groceries he is carrying and grab his gun and shoot the offender before getting shot or stabbed in the heart .

There will also be little meek guys , frail , elderly and also women with their gun in their handbag . A handbag a 12 year old hood has no trouble snatching , OH OH now we've got a 12 year old hood with a gun . Guns stored in cars , uncountable cars get stolen every year , i wonder how many guns end up on the street like that ? All these people would have as much right as you to carry a gun , and what an easy source for the crooks .

I have no problem with people keeping a weapon for home defense , but carrying one to the supermarket or the hair salon does not sit well with me .

With your way of thinking it would be OK for Uni students etc to bring one to school with them .

It is already like that here. You break into a house and steal their guns when they are not home.

As for uni students to carry guns... if they have a legal permit, let them.

If you hear someone creeping and feel your wife in bed next to you, you can assess that it's probably a bad guy. Of course, everyone's situation on here is a little different. Usually, family doesn't break windows or boot in doors at o'dark hundred. You be the judge of that TBN moral dilemma!

Your thought process will be refined a tad as your family grows. Trust me. ;)

Infants become mobile.
Children get friends that visit.
Teenage daughter's boyfriend tries to hide in a closet.... (well, depending on the kid, he might deserve a shootin'! :p )

Anyhow, you get my drift. I'm sure you'll evaluate the situation as time goes by and make the adjustments you see fit to make as a husband and father. :D

Thanks for the map! That's exactly what I was looking for. :)

Leaving politics out of it (again, nice job of doing this folks), it clearly shows a different set of values and thought processes around urban areas VS rural areas. I suppose it applies to many other issues besides guns.

Perhaps tractors, wood burners, self sufficiency, doing things for yourself VS wanting someone to fix it for you (both mechanical things and social issues I suppose).

. Certainly the majority of folks here in the USA are smart enough to know this which is why a gun ban is nothing we have to worry about. The .

Hello?!?! where have you been the last 25 years? Remember DC? There HAVE been localized gun bans in the US..

I suppose you could think (as I like to think) that the majority of Americans would not like to see more stringent gun control. But, the reality of it is most Americans live in or near cities. And that is where the majority of gun violence is. And those city folks are probably sick and tires of gun violence. So... all it would take is someone to convince them that gun control is the answer.

:(

Yep.. the sheeple think that if guns are 'controled' that the badguys won't have guns anymore... WRONG! it just means the good guy's won't have guns to defend themselves when the bad guys show up.

Yep, you're correct! That's why I threw in the disclaimer that "everyone's situation is a little different here".

You have to have situational awareness and you have to teach your children well. You have to let them know early on that friends breaking windows, kicking in doors, or just trying to sneak in could quite possibly get them into a LOT of trouble and I'm not talking with the authorities. Situational awareness covers middle of the day or a Saturday evening tyrst. You have to think, be aware, see your target and make rational decisions, especially where the possibility of deadly force exists.

I have an 11 month old daughter. She'll know from her upbringing that those things won't be acceptable and the word will be out to not be sneaking around Podunk's place. I'll give in on a lot of things, but my family's protection and the protection of our personal belongings, that I've worked hard for, won't be compromised. I'll not sit idly by while someone steals my stuff to support his/her crack habit, booze habit, or for them to sell for $ because they won't work. Won't happen. Call me an adjective of your choice, but it will not happen. I'm not saying that I'd shoot someone caught trying to ciphon the gas out of one of my vehicles for example, or rustle one of my farm animals, but I will hold them until authorities show up. If they are armed and present a grave danger to me or a family member/friend/anyone else, different story.
