Best National Parks

In my last post I wrote to go to beartooth pass out of Yellowstone. It is outside of the town of Cody, Wyoming. In Yellowstone, go into the Old Faithful lodge and check it out, upstairs too!
Been over that pass a few times, it's spectacular. HS

I enjoyed the Tetons and Yellowstone.
Rushmore is nice, and I agree, go thru custer state park and visit all the little towns around. If at Rushmore, also see devils monument.
I want to go back to Acadia when it isn't raining, was up on cadillac mt in a downpour.

Karen and I went to Yellowstone and Mt Rushmore last October. End of September and the Beginning of October is by far the best time to visit the parks if you want to see the elk bugling and get the aspens turning color. Everything else is always going to be amazing, but to hear the elk and see them out in the open chasing each other around, or herding up the cows is truly something to see!!!

The Black Hills have always been a favorite place for me and this was the first time I have been there for the Buffalo Roundup in Custer State Park. I've always heard about it, so we gave it a try. Never again, it was a massive traffic jam just to see them move the Bison around on horseback. I much prefer seeing them out in the fields on their own and not being herded around. I also was there for Sturgis a few years ago and that was another mistake. Too many bikes all over the place, non stop. Everyone was nice, but it's just too loud for me and it proved almost impossible to find any animals.

Crazy Horse is one of the all time great disappointments. It's a great idea, but it's been over 60 years of work and except for the horses face painted on the rock, all you have is one face carved into the rock. They probably will never finish it, and all it seems to be is a money raiser for the family to live off of. The amount of work they do on it is minimal to non existent. There is also a problem with the rock not being good for carving and impossible to finish because of the poor location.

Here is a link to the album we created on FB if anybody wants to see some of the pics we took

I'd seen pictures of Mt. Rushmore all my life. About 6-7 years ago we got the opportunity to travel out west. I was very disappointed with Mt. Rushmore. I expected it to be much larger. I found myself thinking.... "That's it?". While I admired the craftsmanship and design of the monument, I expected something much larger.

The next day we went to the Crazy Horse monument. Remember that scene from Crocodile Dundee? "That's not a knife. THIS is knife." That's what the difference in size between Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse is. Its shocking how much larger the Crazy Horse monument is compared to Mt. Rushmore. And... no tax dollars on Crazy Horse. My wife say it as a little girl. She was impressed how nice the face is now. But, as with all things, they have run into faults in the rock that won't allow them to finish it as originally intended, so they'll have to change the design as they go.

Really, if you want a nice area full of national and private parks to go to, Rapid City, SD has too many things to do in a week in the area. You could also spend a week in Yellowstone and never get bored.

There are also some great parks along the Great Lakes, both east and west coasts, too.

Let's face it folks, the United States is second to none with things to see and do. You just have to pick a spot and go.

Did you go to the craft sale at the Buffalo Roundup Eddie? My Mom has been a vendor there for the last 10+ years.

We drove by it, and all of the parking. It was crazy how many people where there and how far away the had to park to get to it. We where looking for animals and trying real hard to get away from all the crowds. :)
