Best place to buy tank magnets?

Woa. $85 for my hydraulic and 35 for my engine?

$10 for magnets at your local hardware or electronics store is the way I would go. Seriously. Or tear apart an old hard drive and use those.

Not worth $110 IMO...

In another thread, you posted a link to this:

Oil Filter Metallic Shaving/Particle Retainer - Oil Changes - Car Maintenance - Griot's Garage

Is there a reason you decided against using one of these? I'm curious because I was thinking of buying one...looks like a simple solution.

Thanks!

I will probably go with one of these. My thoughts were that an in-tank filter would do 2 things:

1) Potentially more effective: provide a way to trap metal particles without needing to go through the filter. If it is floating around in there, the tank magnet will catch it.

2) Ease of inspection: You can check if you're capturing anything simply by pulling the tank magnet out. If it's connected to the dip stick, then it will be really easy to check.

That said, the filter magnet is a really simple way to go, and there is no risk of anything coming apart in the tank, and it is easy to install.

I guess I just assumed rare earth magnets were expensive. These may do the trick:
K&J Magnetics - Products

The pull force on the one designed for the filter seems out of whack, 800 lbs pull force! That would be tough to get off the filter! :)

Never saw this site, and did not know that heat effected magnetizm (is this why my wife finds me hot but is not attracted to me?)

You might want to check out another one of their high temperature magnets;
BY042SH
It has a little more power and is probably better suited to our larger filters. I bought a set.

All the best,

We had a problem with a cotton picker and rust in the tank... a few old stereo speakers stuck to the tank... worked great and they were free.

Hahahaha! Pretty funny.

We have a magnetic thermometer on our wood stove top. After two years, it stopped sticking. It got run up to 800 degrees every night for 6 months, though.

I wouldn't think the oil would get so hot to be that much of a problem with magnets on the oil filters. I too am going to pull apart a few hard drives and use those on the filters.

Smaller is better.
I noticed that some of my bigger magnets don't stay on as the PT rocks and rolls around.

HD magnets are amazingly strong.

All the best,

Peter
