I get my replacement shafts from ASC when I get one which is rare and usually my fault too.

The final extension was the PTO guard. I had to add close to a foot to the guard tube. I found that the tube itself could be slipped out of the larger guard bell that shields the u joint. Went to a JD dealer with the little stub of tube, hoping that they’d have a piece of this sitting around. The only thing they seem to understand is part numbers. The best they could offer is a full assembly of half the guard for $95. Or a new longer full driveline assy for only $650. Nope, not doing that. I can’t believe that people will spend this kind of $$. Went to Lowe’s. It was a pleasant surprise to find that 2” PVC pipe has exact the same outer diameter as the inner guard tube, and for less than $20. For just a few bucks was able to cut a new length of inner tube. Used some stainless steel washer-head wood screws to secure the tube rather than use if the plastic latches. Done, and ready to roll!

Three, depending on the type of extension used, it can allow somebody to connect a 540 RPM 6-spline implement to a 1000 RPM PTO shaft on a tractor and destroy the implement by running it at almost twice its rated speed.
I know of a friend that did this with his snowblower. It didn't destroy the snowblower. He could just throw the snow considerably further. I never saw the hookup so I don't know what his drive line angles were. I do know that it's something he would have kept in mind though.

The only reason for a PTO shaft guard is when moving around a rotating shaft.. such as an attachment like a chipper or buzz saw.
Needing one on a rotary brush hog or snowblower where it only operates when on the seat -- meaningless and just decoration.

And that a dealer doesn't have one lying around means they keep their place cleaned up and not a huge junk pile.

Good that you found some PVC pipe to fashion a shaft guard.

@beenthere: I agree that the PTO guard is window-dressing. But, it's there, so I might as well keep it close to stock, and it doesn't hurt. What I find more frightening is this snow blower. If an article of clothing was to be snagged by the auger, it would pull in the poor victim and produce mincemeat without hesitating. The older model 47 blower was the same way. Machines have no mercy. But let's not have this thread turn into one discussing the terrors of PTO shafts and snow blowers. That's for another thread.
