Best remod. TV show-Rides, Overhaulin\', Monster...

Anyone else enjoy the TLC and Discovery Channel line up. I love watching Chip Foose's work on that Overhaulin' show, but I find the hosts and all the other stuff kind of tedious. Which is why I think that Rides is the best of the bunch. Pure machining enthusiasm without all of the silly "reality show" fluff of the other programs.

Well, I like Overhalin' out of them all. I really like the way they do cars on that show. I think that is how cars should be done.

Overhaulin has a great build team... The lady host and Foose can stay /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif , but most of the rest can go....

BIG is kinda nice... lots of arguing tho...

Rides is great... Some of their projects are mind boggling...

Monster garage, the one that started it all is still on top... although they seem to be running out of project ideas...

American Chopper is boring... I know those guys can't argue that much in real life... They need new producers...

American Hotrod still holds my attention...
They need to give Roy his own show. Wish he'd explode another coffee cup...

Here's an Idea... Give WHarv a show...
American Fabricator... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I'd watch...

Scott you had me doing the "amen, pass the chips" until this: ( Here's an Idea... Give WHarv a show...

You know it's really funny, these television producers. They just can't seem to get it.

They see doin' it shows are in demand. But they just can't seem to understand that's what folks want, folks doin' it. Not folks arguing and fighting. Heck, most of them get enough of that at home and work already.

I guess all the learnin' they've got is about sitcoms and soaps. So they think that there isn't enough drama in making things. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

There could be a whole series on blacksmiths. Some of the guys who travel doing demonstrations are fantastic. It is amazing to watch a piece of scrap steel become a flower, a tool, or a fixture that's perfect.

I'd like to see a series on rock carving.

Or how about one on timber framing?

One on simple problem solving ideas would be a hit I'm sure.

We're considering a job for a customer that involves making a pier out onto his pond. He thought driving in beams etc. I suggested a cantilever design. We might do it.

It would be interesting to see a show designing and building such a project. Then I would know what to do on this one.

Another great show that I'm sure a bunch of us would be interested in would designing and building a tandem axle trailer. Take a camera crew to a couple of the walmart style wham bammers out in east Texas. Then visit someone like my bud Ronnie Young who makes custom race car haulers. And then lay out and put together a trailer from the scratch with a bunch of ideas added in that guys like us could do at home.

We're just ahead of our time Scott. Maybe television will catch up to us about the time we're at the age to slow down for them. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

is it just me or is Boyd Coddington a real weenie? I think he tries to hard to be as tough as Paul Sr., but it comes off more as he's a real jerk...I don't care if he's a legend or not, I wouldn't work for him for 10 minutes if he treated me that way...

Actually if you read the TV industry publications you will see that American Chopper is the highest rated show on Discovery Channel. I don't think you will see a format change any time soon.

These types of "doin it" shows need some type of controversy (yelling/screaming) or silliness in order to keep the casual viewer entertained. The gearhead/techie audience segment is but a small portion of the total audience. If all you saw was welding, applying bondo, etc, it would get boring rather fast and the show would be off the air due to poor ratings.

There are also the infomercial type of shows like Trucks! and Horsepower TV. These are aimed at the gearhead/techies who will go out and spend $$$ on the products used on the shows.

Its all ratings, ratings, ratings and how much the sponsors and product placers (ie. the products being used) are paying.

Harv,

I will say "Amen, pass the chips!" My sentiments exactly, get rid of all the "planned drama" and just make it about the ingenuity. It's the main reason that I like that Rides show. Low key narrator in the background and good production. The work is dramatic enough without all the extra fluff.

I think that format would translate really well to other areas, such as blacksmithing, as you suggest.

Ultimately, however, I think that it would work best with an extreme architecture theme as a basis, with the same production. Nice! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I've watched all the episodes and I can't recall anything he did that I thought was inappropriate.

I figure he's got to be one heck of a psychologist. He's got the ex- wife and trophy wife working at the same place and hasn't been murdered yet! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I always liked Junkyard Wars. Make something out of nothing, make it work(some better than others), and do it with a time limit. A real time limit. Not "We have two months to get this done and you guys have been working really hard so lets go ride go carts for the camera". They make some cool stuff too
