Truely ahead... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Just like you say... I work in retail and deal with arguementive folks all day... about the last thing I want to do is watch some more arguing. I want to see somthing inventive, slick, or at the very least clever.

Since I've climbed on to the soapbox,

Modern Marvels is a perfect example of a good show. Major building projects, Golden Gate Bridge, Hoover Dam, Panama Canal. I find these structures awe inspiring, epic... To think these massive projects were completed by average fellas doin' their thing everyday simply amazing.

Watching a father and son argue about the same things every show while the employees do impressive things with metal in the background is not entertaining to me.

I find it ironic that the most interesting motorcycle on the show was built by the lead mechanic and the shop "slacker" while the owner and the "chief designer" were away.

Remember that what you see on TV is what the producer wants you to see. It has been reported in several interviews that the editing of some of the "arguments", "screw-ups" and such of the "doin' it" shows is not in actual sequence and that the video shown does not always match the audio as to when stuff happened. In other words, a lot of what you see was done in the editing room.

The average show has 2 or 3 hand held cameras running 8-10 hours per day for anywhere from 1 to 2 weeks to get a single show. Thats 80-120 hours of film per week that is condensed into 45 minutes of "action" that you see on TV.

Re: Best remod. TV show-Rides, Overhaulin\', Monster...

I guess I'm just a fan of the more documentary style shows than the reality show formats, because I enjoyed the last Motorcycle Mania show on Jesse James, even though it had a lot of the "human element" to it, and not that much fabrication.

Now, if I were back in college, I could see American Chopper being a fantastic drinking game. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Every time Paul Sr. mentions his "size 12's" everyone does a shot, etc. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I guess it has that repetative nature necessary to such games. I also think that the repatative nature is why you hear that 15 minute clock counting down in the background. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Not much of my time spent on the 'reality' shows (only ones close to real, IMO are the poker ones) but click through them occasionaly. But they are as entertaining and as phony as professional wrestling (acting). I don't think I could 'dumb' myself down to the level of the viewer who is entertained by these shows, including the dating ones (but sex sells so someone is watching). Hopefully the society we live in doesn't really act that way.
Now, texas no-limit fold-em poker is entertaining (although stretched into two hours where one would do it for me). The director doesn't get to arrange the deck (I don't think /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif ) ahead of time. Much more entertaining to me.

But, I rarely watch a movie just because I don't like to be 'jerked' around by a movie director. Wierd, I know.

i agree entirely, the show turned into more of a sopa opera than a real show that showed some neat fabrication and how to do it type stuff, and as for the arguing part, a friend of my ex gf was a mortgage person of some sort, im not exactly sure what she did, but i guess she had dealt with paul jr when he was doing some sorta mortgage thing, refinancing or who knows what, but anyhow the point of what im saying is she had met both of them paul sr and paul jr back around the time they were just starting the show and she said that in real life paul sr was very polite and decent to deal with but paul jr was the one who had a cocky attitude to him, sorta opposite what the show portrays them as. you can almost tell how its all setup and almost scripted now. i personaly am not that impressed with the work they do anyhow, alot of assembling parts with a little fab work but definatly not the one off custom type work that jesse james does.

This is exactly my point. More action and less drama would entertain me. Arguements do not. I know I'm in the minority though...

Re: Best remod. TV show-Rides, Overhaulin\', Monster...

Well, I saw some of "Chopper" last night, and it appears that they're trying to take a page out of the Rides notebook. They seem to be shooting in film now, and there appeared to be a lot less arguing, although I did skip around a bunch, so I can't attest to it.

Still like the documentary style better.

Re: Best remod. TV show-Rides, Overhaulin\', Monster...

They are not shooting in film. They are shooting in HD format. The post processing they use is not the greatest but the film look is a direct result of the HD. There are plenty of network shows that are shot in HD and some get it better (post processing for regular tv) than others. From what I have heard, American Chopper looks spectacular when viewed on a real HDTV on Discovery HD Channel.

You had better get used to this style as you will be seeing it more and more in the future as the push to HD TV becomes more pronounced and more readily available.

Actually, I like the "film" look a whole lot better! It seemed as though they were making a move towards a lesser "reality show" format, which I appreciated. Thanks for the correction, though. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Anyone catch "Rides" last night? This episode was right up my alley... A guy and his car buddies built a true grassroots, "era specific" hotrod out of old parts.
