Best store purchased spiral ham?

We were given a HoneyBaked ham gift card worth $15 and were planning to use it to buy our Christmas dinner ham, but the price of the meat there is simply obscene, so we are going to head out and find one at a lower price.

Any advice as to the best brand to buy? Thank you for any advice and opinions.

I hate spiral cut ham. By definition the massively increased surface area guarantees dry ham on the table. Buy a regular ham and a sharp knife.

This is the first year we had a ham with our turkey and sausage (its a Polish thing) for Thanksgiving. We bought a 10lb Smithfield spiral cut ham at the grocery store. I double wrapped it in foil, heated up the grill good and hot, then turned one burner off and the other burner on low. Put that foil wrapped ham on the side with no burner and let it warm up for an hour and a half. It was delicious! :licking:

I did it on the grill because the oven was too hot with the turkey cooking and it saved space for some side dishes in the oven. The cut was all the way to the bone. No wasted anything. I trimmed it all up and we had great leftovers and two bags of diced ham for omlets in the freezer for later. We'll do it again next year. :thumbsup:

Have always had good luck with the Costco spiral hams. Never had one dry out.

Well, I had no idea what exactly any of you were talking about regarding a 'spiral ham' or 'spiral cut ham'.

So it was off to Google to find that it's a pre-cut, on the bone, ham. OK? :confused3:

Is it a convenience thing? I mean, how hard is it to carve a ham of the bone?

I like the Smithfield hams. I don't use the Honey glaze that comes with it as I don't like a sweet ham.
The best ham I ever had was one a fellow worker picked up in Virginia. It came wrapped in burlap, salt cured and smoked. It was delicious but I don't know the name of the preparer. It wasn't cheap though, about $100 for the 20 pound ham and this was in 1985.
