What was that old story about cooking ham? Went something like:

Mother was showing daughter how to cook a ham. She said the first thing you have to do is cut 2" off the ham. Daughter asked her why? She said she didn't know, but said that's the way her mother taught her. So the daughter calls up grandma and asks her why she has to cut off 2" from the ham to cook it? Grandma says, "My pan was too small."

Costco now has a boneless ham, it is boned before smoking, not rolled pressed or formed. While you don't have the bone to make soup with it is very good and no waste at all, it's not cut but slicing it is pretty simple without the bone, even after sipping beer all day.

I hate spiral cut ham. By definition the massively increased surface area guarantees dry ham on the table. Buy a regular ham and a sharp knife.

Cover and bake for 15 minutes a pound at 325 degree in a liter of coke. Moist. Perfect.

I like the Cure 81 spiral-cut hams sold everywhere and at Walmart.

Haven't had a bad spiral ham yet. Could not even tell you the brand on the label. They were bought at Zehrs or Sobies.

Honey baked hams are nice, but I miss when my mom would bake a sugar cured, hardwood smoked Pagan Virginia ham. She would cook the whole thing and have to remove the outer skin, glaze it and add whole cloves before finishing it off. It would be gone in a few days and she would make split pea soup with the bone.

I refuse to buy boneless hams. It is cruel how they breed those pigs to have no bones and how they can only just flop around. Terrible thing to see I hear.

I am guilty of buying a number of those boneless hams myself...they are so rubbery...thank you for clearing up the mystery for us here.... And for what it may be worth we ended up buying a Meijers brand premium spiral ham...as to those who advise that cooking dries one out, a very simple solution is to place the ham in an oven bag prior to heating it up.

I'm one of those cooks that hardly ever makes the same exact thing twice as I mostly wing it. I've most always poked a lot of cloves into our hams, wife likes me to hang pineapple slices all around and stick a cherry in center of each one. I'll normally finish with whatever glaze is provided. One year my wife had made a rum cake and absent minded lay doubled the rum glaze recipe. It became part of my ham glaze. Lots of favorable comments that year :)

I prefer a butt portion uncut and cut it myself but my wife usually buys a spiral sliced at Aldi Foods, never had a bad or another brand that was any better. All these hams come precooked. What I do is take a cookie sheet put about 1/2 cup of water in it and put 2 cooling racks in the pan, roll out some aluminum foil, poke a few small holes in it and set the ham on the aluminum foil cut side down, completely wrap the ham in foil and heat for about half what they say to. Always turns out great. We never use that nasty glaze the spiral ones come with.

How to solve the "Dry Ham" problem. Use the oven bags made for turkeys. No more dry ham. Now I'm going to have to go buy a ham . Darn it.

I don't think Honey Baked Hams recommends cooking their hams.
