Best string trimmer string.

I have a Stihl FS-90R string trimmer. It is a nice unit. A little more than what is needed for just around the house but I use it for other heavier stuff too. Stihl lists it as a professional trimmer for whatever that is worth.

The Stihl string that came with it was terrible. Every post, pole, brick or piece of sidewalk it touched wore it down or broke it off rapidly. When that was gone I bought a large spool of Husqvarna branded 'heavy duty' string. It was just as bad or maybe worse. Now it is almost gone and I'm looking for something better. Tired of constantly having to reload string onto the trimmer.

Can anyone recommend a good durable string for a trimmer this size? Or if it is somehow user error I'm open to any tips for longer string life.

I have found the new (to us, anyway) tri-colour line from Stihl to be particularly strong.

It has Black/Grey/Orange stripes.

Another thing that will cause trimmer line to break is it dries out, throw it in a bucket of water for awhile.

I got this guy here. No more screwing around with string. Blades last plenty long, and are pretty cheap.

Well, that Husqvarna string is exactly what I have and it tested well in both of his videos. Not so much for me.

Same for me, as I was going though the spool of Husqvarna I found it to vary in size/diameter. It ranged from about a .040 to .125, so thick it could not pass the guides of the trimmers. I am now back to using a spool of Stihl trimmer line and it is hit and miss, some of lengths of it wears very well and some of it breaks almost instantly.

I can't tell what size string you are currently running. I'd suggest you get a cam lock head and go to .155 string. We've try lots of string brands and find little difference but size does matter. Go big.

I'm using .095 right now. Thicker than the OEM line, but not .115. I tried the plastic blades, they worked OK, but not nearly as good as thicker line.

I can take any grass and light brush with it on my Echo 58v trimmer. It may not be best for a pro, but I get 2 hours of trimming on one charge. With 90+ degrees and 90% humidity, I cannot stay out that long.

I may try some .115 next time.

I bought a large roll of Echo brand string at HD. One thing I learned from a small engine repair shop owner. He said that all of the strings become dry and brittle over time, especially if they are stored in the heat. He recommended that the roll of string be submerged in a bucket of water for a day periodically to avoid it becoming dry and brittle.
