I’ve got a double ended pipe fitting between my wood splitter valves and due to not being able to completely tighten it it leaks. Is there a better sealant that won’t leak or should I take it apart and use put a jic fitting in it? IMG_4561.JPG

Permatex Aviation joint compound.

Ptfe/others are designed to fill the minute gaps in threads which are installed tight. This joint is seeing (guess) 2000 psi, most likely pulsed, unless it's tight, it won't seal, or the sealant(whatever type, unless quick metal or similar) will eventually leak/be moved from between the surfaces. If you have room to remount and have a male and female JIC, I would go that way for longevity. You'll need ptfe or you preferred sealant on the threaded fittings to the valve block, but you'll be able to do them tight, then hold the male and tighten the female JIC. YMMV

Loctite helped me with my hydraulic line install. Only issue is they recommend 72hours for full cure.

I bought the stuff to fix it. The JIC to pipe fittings were a little less than $10 so if that fixes it I’ll be happy.IMG_4566.JPG

I moved from plumbers tape to Loctite thread sealant.

Doesn稚 break off and go through the system and screw it up. Use immediately. I put it on all hydraulic connections. No leaks thus far and VERY easy to use. I like it much better than tape any day of the week.

x2 on loctite 545.

For hydraulic fittings there are also NPSM fittings. Similar to JIC but pipe thread.

Upon further investigation I think poor threads were the cause of the original issue. One fitting went in a lot farther and looking at the fitting that came out the same thing happened. I’m taking it back apart tomorrow and running a tap in it. IMG_4571.JPGIMG_4572.JPG

Teflon tape is not good to use on hydraulics. The tape can come off in the system and get stuck in ports and valves. Use a liquid sealer or no sealer.

I don’t usually use Teflon tape. I hate the stuff. That was provided with the machine and it was much thicker than regular Teflon tape. That’s the only joint that leaked so it must’ve been pretty good.

I keep a tube of Loctite 567 in my toolbox and use it on most everything. Another one is Gasoila PLS2. We use both in the oil and gas industry on most threaded connections.

Loctite 565 is the faster version of their 545, supposed to withstand 10,000 psi "rapidly", whatever THAT means; I stick to the 565 (not usually in that much of a rush) on the exceedingly rare occasions where I haven't already junked pipe fittings for JIC's, ORBs, etc... Steve

There are two kinds of pipe threads

The ones that leak,
And the ones that will.

I hvve a loader with the oldest hose from 1985. I removed that hose because the UV rays killed the hose. Not because the pipe threads leaked.

With that logic every house in american would also have water leaks.

Not to mention Auto industry that uses a ton of npt

Technically PTFE tape is not a thread sealant, its a lubricant, its designed to lubricate threads so you can tighten fitting more to get tighter mechanical fit of threads..... I hate the stuff and it hates me...

I take this comment as referring to NPT threads assembled with no leak preventive measures? If so, I tend to agree. I always use some type of sealant.

I have a product made by Permatex. Looks like a tube of tooth paste - light grey in color. Specifically made for use with piping carrying petroleum products. Smear it on all the thread except the first two or three. Been using it for 12+ years now. Seals just fine.

As my journeyman plumber friend said "get that **** tape out of here" teflon tape is just a band aid the ignorant use on a mortal leaking wound. All it does is make more of a mess and when it breaks off inside it F's up everything it's used on. USE PIPE DOPE or the proper PERMATEX brand liquid thread sealant for whatever fluid or gas you're working with.
