Best type of dog

The funny thing about herding dogs is they don't know or care what they are supposed to "herd"...most will try to herd anything they can including people...it can be very entertaining...

Some very good herding mixes have come from the pound...

Shetland sheep dog by miles the best dog I,v ever had.They do like to bark alot but with training you can manage it easily.Very good with kids and very loyale.The one and only downfall is the shedding if in the house,and thats where it will be.They love thier family and want to be with them!

Something to consider is that the common/popular dogs are popular for a reason.

For a while I was considering getting a rare & exotic dog, but after doing a lot of research on it, I decided to go along with the collective wisdom of millions of others.

There is frequently a reason why rare breeds are rare...

A lot of lab/lab mixes will meet the criteria and they say that in the first year a Lab gets its height, the second year its weight and the third year its brains The other thing you might look into is a "career change" guide dog -- great pets with some character flaw that you will know (like too friendly with other dogs etc)

Quite frankly, you should not be considering getting another dog if you intend leaving it alone inside for 9 hrs a day.

There's a reason why there is so many Lab fans. When is the last time you heard of anyone or thing being attacked by a pure Lab? It just does not happen -- the breed does not have it in them.

My old Aussie Shepherd would herd my son and his friends when they were little. It was cute. She would not let them stray very far from us. Awesome dog. People turned her in to the pound at 9 months old, said "not good with kids" on the papers they filled out. I don't think they understood puppies. She was awesome with kids. She was just a puppy and a bit rambunctious.

Dang, I miss her; tearing up a bit now. I sat in that vet's parking lot for an hour crying. Dang good vet. They came out and checked on me. Over 16 years I had that dog. Sheba the tri color blue merle hound from the pound.

Well this little pooch appears to be the one. The wife and kids fell in love with her. Thanks all for the advice and input. Please keep it coming it is very interesting to hear other peoples experiences. Not sure what kind of a dog this will turn out to be as I have never had either of the breeds in the mix but I am a big believer in a dog is as good as its owner so we will see. All I have had up to date is lab mixes and my wife痴 cockapoo. Anywise thanks for the input here is (most likely) the newest addition to our family
