Huge difference. Is the plan to burn each pile one at a time? When I cleared 7 acres for my pond, I made one long and thin pile and started the fire at one end and let it burn to the other end, which worked great for me.

Right now I burn one or two piles at a time, since they will burn down completely to ashes at the end of the day before I go home. Since I do not live there yet, I do not want to leave any fire unattended. In a month or so, I will not be able to cut trees and paint them with herbicide because the sap will be flowing in the trees. During that time, we will focus on burning only, and we can probably do several per day and still get them done at the end of each day.

Today we are up to 1260 pear trees cut down and 9 piles burned.

That’s impressive progress. How’s the cutter holding up?

The TurboSaw is a beast. I really like it. Best used for trees up to 11" in diameter.

Update: As of February 5, 2020, my wife and I have been working on the property for 6 months. We both work full time, so we only get to work on it on the weekends. The whole month of January and early February it has rained a LOT, which has slowed us down. So far we have cut down 1282 Bradford Pear trees and burned 21 burn piles. Still lots left to go, but we now know the property well and are starting to think where we will place a house, detached garage, barn, horse pastures, and hay fields. Before we do any of that, we will need to lime all of the fields first since the soil is fairly acidic in our area of East Tennessee.

Looks like the saw and grapple are working great for you. I wish I could have done that with my pines and saved a lot of $ but they too big , tall, and crowded. You are doing right by painting the Bradford stumps. Any little bit of live root left behind would regrow. The herbicide guarantees you get it all.

Id like to see a updated post in a couple of years and let us know if leaving the stumps were a problem or not for you. I cut 50 trees from my backyard (mostly oak) up to 24" trunks 20 years ago and ground the stumps to 6-12" below grade. I haven't had to put more than a wheelbarrow full of dirt out since then to cover any depressions and haven't had the first stump hole show up.
