Best way to fill in a 24'dia x 4'deep hole?

Hello hemiguy; I don't know exactly what kind of fill dirt you plan on using, but I would use just plain red clay. If the dump trucks can back up to the hole ,all the better. If not you've got a frontend loader. Fill the hole in almost even with the ground with red clay. Pack it with your tractor tires good. Then overfill the hole with good top soil at least a foot higher than ground level, plant something of her choice and let mother nature do the rest. Six months later the settling will be over and the area can be sodded or whatever. Just my 2 cents worth. Good luck with however you decide to go. All things work better with "GOD" as the co-pilot.

I am doing this same job at my father-in-law. His 4'-5' deep by 24'. Went down this past week-end. He said he had a load of dirt delivered. Well, 1 load dis about 1/4 of the fill. Dump truck could not go to within 30 feet of hole. Used FEL to move dirt and just keep building my way from the edge. Took about 1 hour to move the load.
I am not going to worry to much about compacting it. No way I can get it as tight as a few million years has on the surounding ground

You could try using a copactor in the hole. Use the FEL and chain to lower it in. Put the compactor against one side and fill 1' or more all around it. Then jump in the hole and compact the stuff you just dumped. Then park the compactor on the high side and fill the spot it was sitting in. This way, you do not have to disturb anymore ground than you have to.

You could also try using water to compact the fill. A good soaking usually does a pretty good job.
