best way to move big-ish rocks?

Really? I'm dealing with granite here... and I want to move it along some back roads, which technically aren't public, but I'd rather not crush passing cars with out-of-control Indiana-Jones-style rolling stones...

They don't roll out of control because they're not normally perfectly round. Doesn't matter the shape. Just roll it over one turn at a time. I've moved extremely heavy rocks this way - uphill and downhill.

If you've got to go over roads, roll it up the ramps onto a landscape or equipment trailer, chain it down and go to it.

Rolling is the safest. Lifting, if possible, is dangerous. Skidding can be too. The rock can slide where you don't want it. One roll at a time can be very well controlled. You can roll way more than you can lift or skid. I built a 100 foot long boulder retaining wall about 6-8 feet high with my little B2630 - I've moved a lot of rock.

Ive moved way bigger rocks than that with my b2630. Talking like 5-6 foot diameter. Just use the loader to roll the rock along to where you want it. Rather easy actually.

I have a rock about that size that I want to move. Thought it would be too big to drag, for sure too big to lift. Don't know why I never thought of rolling it. I'll probably still wait for the ground to freeze a little bit so it doesn't sink into a soft spot before I get it where I want it. The ground is pretty solid most of the way. I'll have to give it a try in the next few days.

Roll them on a hood off a truck, chain to drawbar and drag 'em.

I use my tree spade bucket, the longer reach and curved sides work wonders for moving boulders.

Are u talkin about using a hydraulic tree transplanter with retracting spades??

You might need front chains, CUZ you might have to wait till frozen ground start lookin around for a cheap set,...Eric

No I think he's talking about a pointed bucket for the loader. I have one. It's basically like a giant pointed shovel. Picks up rocks easy.

Or if you really want to help the economy out of recession and spend the bucks you can get a grapple.

Boulder sling, $10 in chain
The paint is to eliminate confusion when tangled.

Hey that's a great idea! I have a white quartz rock in the woods that I would love to get to the top of the driveway. I think I could to it with this. Thanks!
