Best way to remove freeze plug?

DLMaine01, Does the B Heater have a rubber seal around it ?? If so, I would only use antifreeze on it.

If it has a center nut to tighten it into to hole ?? maybe they want locktite on that?

No rubber seal here, see attached pic. Directions say "Loctite should be used to help seal adapter bushing into the block. Teflon tape should be used on heating element threads".
Pretty specific directions I was just wondering how it worked in the real world.
Thanks
Dave

DlMaine01, I see said the blind man.

Get the old freeze plug removed with out marking the sealing area....provide a CLEAN and dry surface for the loctite coated adapter.

Be sure to have it straight , use a hammer big enough to make it move [dont tap on it..soft metal]

Teflon tape the threads is correct.

Update on the freeze plug. I was not able to get the freeze plug to turn inside it's hole. The side I tried to drive back moved about 1/8" and stopped. So I tried the other side and was able to rock it back and forth a very little bit. After a quick consult with local wise old farmer it was decided to drill a small hole in the plug to insert a screw to remove it. It worked! Turns out the plug was inserted into the hole farther than it needed to be and the water jacket is quite thin in this area. Another thing I discovered after I got the plug out was I was not the first person to use this method on this tractor. And while I drilled with extreme caution the last person had not. That is what the dark spot in the middle of the plug hole in the pic is, a drill bit gone a little to far!
The heater sleeve went in fine and left plenty of room for coolant flow.

After the block heater was in I measured again and there was no way it would have fit behind the starter so I guess this is the best spot for it. Best of all no leaks! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Now on to bigger and better things like the hyd. remotes.

I guess I am a bit late here, but for next time, if there is ever a next time. I have replaced so many plugs that I can’t remember the number (I lived near Buffalo, before moving to Florida). I have tried ALL kinds of things to make it easier (everything said here).

My best way of removing a plug and NOT losing it in the block (happen long ago with doing the knock one end and pull on the other), is to drill the plug and use a “Dent Puller” (has a screw on the end of the rod) with a slide hammer, works great. IF there is room to drill it, there is room for the good old dent puller.

Thanks Ronald and thanks for all the tips for the heater installation. I am sure it will come in handy this winter.

Dent puller idea sounds like a winner also.

Gday guys, I know this is a late post but a word of warning here especialy when drilling through a "frost plug" as we call them here, On some engines, the the inside face of the plug is very close to the outside of the cylinder liner and Ive seen a guy drill right through the liner and into the piston. The same goes for getting to ambitios with a hammer and chisel, Cyl liners are very brittle.

Cheers

I put a screwdriver through some of the ones i removed before. just drive it in and be careful not to drive the screwdriver to far in. then pry it out.
