Best way to start burn pile

OK here is a radical idea....

take an old 5 gallon plastic bucket, put 2 gallons of gas in the bucket, break up your old Styrofoam into small pieces and drop in bucket let it dissolve stir occasionally. Add more Styrofoam until it is thick like molasses.

When you have a bucket full of gooo throw the bucket on top of your pile and let it run down for a hour or so.

Ignite the gooo with your weed burner and watch the fun it will not flare upon igniting like straight gas.... we like to call it homemade NAPALM!!!

burning brush releases no more carbon into the environment then letting the wood decompose naturally. it just occurs all at once instead of over a period of years.

now, oil, tires, carpet padding, diesel, wax toilet rings, dryer sheets, etc - those are all a different story...

makes me want to go out and smoke a cig.... ;-)

One of my favorite ways is to take an old tire, and fill it with diesel, then stack the pile on top of it. This seems to work better in remote area`s at night with a slight wind. My most frequently used way involves old asphalt shingles, used oil, newspaper,a leaf blower, and a couple road flairs. Combine these with the Tires, and if it still won`t lite, it is not combustible. Remember, think green, and may the force be with you.

Most of the time, I use newspaper to get a smaller fire started and build it up. Then as it grows, the entire burn pile gets going. I've also found that cutting the trees into quarters makes a huge difference in getting them to burn. Pines are very dificult to get to burn when they are green, they also take a few months to really dry out, but when cut in half, then those halves are cut in half again, they are ready to burn in just a week or two.

If I have enough dry material in my burn pile to create some hot coals, I can burn anything. It doesn't even matter if it burns down the to ground over night and I add some green pines to it the next day, they will burn to ashes in hours!!!!

I've tried everything mentioned but the carpet padding with mixed results. No matter what I've tried, it always comes down to having a good starter fire to get the rest going.

I was wondering how long it would take for this subject to come up....;)

We keep all our mail trash & papers (anything with information on it) in a separate bag and use it as starter/kindling. plus the torch & blower.

Farmer I use to work for taught me to get a couple of old tires and flares. Pile the tires on the bottom, push the pile over the top with just enough rough to reach the tires and then wait until dark. Start the flares and toss them into the tires. Worked everytime in the wet PNW.

Ahh the days.

Believe it or not, used dryer sheets. Burn hot and medium quick. Especially after cleaning off any dusty video screens!

Recycle, reuse!!
The lint from your dryer's lint trap makes an excellent fire starter to carry with you hiking, camping, etc. A plastic baggie full weighs next to nothing!:)

As far as starting brush piles, I use newspaper and no more than a quart of used motor oil. Let it start small and build up.

A bag of potato chips works real well. Just don't open them before you ignite them as there won't be much left to ignite if you're like me.
