Hauled the tractor today. I taped aluminum foil over the intake and dimpled it in some. Also taped evacuator valve shut so all air, if any would go to aluminum foil and push it outward, thus showing air flow in exhaust, through turbo, and out valves and intke. I checked after I got to job (13 miles away at 55 mph), and found that the aluminum foil lookd the same as before I left.

Here is what it looked like after I made the first trip. Looked the same as before I left to me, so this test showed that no air flow made it through the turbo enough to push the aluminum foil outward.

After thinking more of the tin can cover idea to cheat if the exhaust was still hot, but I wanted to cover pipe and go, here is what I came up with.

Not the can, but just the thin disk lid to a can. On a mx 5200 it wedges perfectly inbetween the exhaust pipe end and the heat sheild. Quick and simple. Just have to watch I dont get cut!

Howdy,
If you have a piece of equipment valued over $20,000 and it has a turbo, and you are trailering it more than 20 miles, COVER the exhaust.

The same reasoning goes behind if your were working the tractor hard pulling a disc, and you stop, you do not just turn off the tractor with the first 20 seconds. The turbo is a very special piece of machinery which needs to be treated properly. Many newer vehicles which have turbo's have actually added a special oil reservoir which will keeps a small amount of oil flowing to the turbo when you shut down the engine. It use to be one of those aftermarket items you would add to a turbo'd vehicle.

Cover the exhaust. It's not rocket science. Stuff a rag in it. tape a trash bag over it, tape it however you do it, just cover the exhaust.

Mike, I think we all agree it's a matter of personal choice. The discussion now is more about why?? So why do you believe it's critical to cover the exhaust??

I think Ray's pictured examples were right on target for the subject.

Bruce, thank you for the link to the exhaust cover. That's perfect. The website must have been updated since you posted it. Here is the new link: Turbo Saver Exhaust Cover
