Re: Better RIde R-1\'s or R-4\'S

Ken, sorry, but I just plain don't know. The only time I've had anything happen like that with a tractor was because the tie rod ends were worn out and loose.

Re: Better RIde R-1\'s or R-4\'S

You sure can have that happen! Most often when the treads are some of the best cleaning, they might be the worst riding! The fuller tire of the R-4's normally always gives a smoother ride on hard surface then the R-1's will. They are trying to give the ag tires a fuller print to eliminate that problem but from what I've seen in those tires so far the performance has been lacking. Bird, normally I'm the one off the problem.

Re: Better RIde R-1\'s or R-4\'S

Interesting question, since turf wasn't one of the choices I would have guessed R4s would give a better ride. Based on other posts it sounds like R1s /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: Better RIde R-1\'s or R-4\'S

I wonder if when this set dies, the replacement front tires should be R-4's? They would have more traction than the near bald R-1's and with all the road miles this tractor gets would last longer. I'm guessing it would reduce some wear on other components too as the worn ag's shakes the **** thing near to pieces in 3 -hi, I can't use 4 -hi as the cab hits a harmonic and seems like it will shake the glass out of the doors!

Re: Better RIde R-1\'s or R-4\'S

Rat,
What PSI are you running on your R4s(front & rear)? I got my L3830 2 weeks ago and I love it.

I did have the dealer switch my tires from Turfs to R4s after just one week. The turfs definitely are a smoother ride than the R4s, no doubt about it, in my opinion. But they get slicked up with mud so easy and since I will not be cutting grass with them, I decided in favor of the R4s. I don't know for sure if the R1s would be the next smoothest ride, probably depends on the tire pressure.

Thanks, Jerry

Re: Better RIde R-1\'s or R-4\'S

When I bought my Kubota B7500, I had to choose between turfs, R1s, or R4s. I thought that after I owned the tractor for a while, if I felt I made the wrong choice, I could always change the tires. But, the R1s use a different size rim, the turfs and R4s use the same rim. Changing rims and tires can get to be very expensive. The turf/R4 type rims offered a little more flexibility.

Re: Better RIde R-1\'s or R-4\'S

Funny you should ask. I have been giving my L3830 HST quite the workout lately. I checked the pressure with a special low pressure gauge I found. The rears are at 9.5 PSI and the fronts are 16 PSI. I watch to see if there is any chance of spinning the rear rim/tire but not even a remote hint of it. The rears never look low, the fronts will drop down with a full heaped load. I could easily up the pressure on the fronts but overall, it's working well for me. I now have 125 hours on my L3830 and like it more all the time. I am finding it unnecessary to load the rear tires with my soil and work I'm doing I'd prefer to keep the whole thing lighter. I do have a 1000lb+ boxscraper hanging on the back. I need to clean it up and get a inventory/pictures of my TnT for several folks.

I'm currently putting in a new driveway and am dealing with a year around creek. Mud and steep sides have pretty much made it necessary to hire out a backhoe. 1 hour of work by a buddy with a CAT 426 backhoe and he made my job much easier. Amazing hunk of steel. Tommorrow I'm laying 40' of 24" pipe. The L3830 will be used to manuver 42 tons of 1" drain rock. That will be a snap. I look forward to it.

Thanks Rat,
I am going to trying lowering my tire pressure down some to see what differences it makes.

Re: Better RIde R-1\'s or R-4\'S

I have noticed many replies on r-4 vs r-1 etc. Someone always mentions that r-4's are worse on hillsides about slipping sideways but what about going up and down hills? Are the r-4's nearly as good as r-1's. Also what about pulling a plow or disc etc. I wouldn't want to have to put a tractor in 4 wheel drive just to pull a plow if r-4's don't get enough traction. Does anyone with r-4's have good traction in loose dirt?
Thanks
Chieff

Re: Better RIde R-1\'s or R-4\'S

In my opinion, the seat springs and adjustments there make more of a difference to the ride than the tires. I choose the R4 tires for my use as a compromise between the traction of an R1 and less-aggressiveness of the turf-tires. Then made sure the seat was comfortable and provided good back support.
