My son got a candy bar at the store on Monday, for the ride home from the cottage. He ate half and then was about to eat the rest when he asked "what's this web stuff on my candy bar"? My wife took a look at it and pulled the bar out of the wrapper and this little guy had beat my son to the punch so to speak! I e-mailed the maker and it seems this is something that is happening quite abit! so watch what you and your family eat. I guess nothing is safe anymore!

I remember when I was a kid my dad bought a box of ginger snap cookies. The box had a string baked into the cookies and six or seven cookies were all attached together. My dad took the top off of the box and mailed it and the cookies to the manufacturer. I less than a week there was a knock at the door and it was a company representative with a case of ginger snaps and a letter of apology. I STILL love ginger snaps with longhorn cheese !

The candy bar is a SNICKERS CRUNCHER. I don't know what kind of worm it is or how it got in the wrapper. I can't find any holes other than the rip my son made to get the bars out.

Buck,
It appears to be a SNICKERS!

But seriously, when I was a kid the lady across the street was always eating some puff ball looking things with coconut. I asked her why they always had these. She replied that she got a free lifetime supply of them(a case delivered to her house every so often) because when she was a little girl she bought one at a train station and bit into a mouse! Her dad wrote the company and she got them free for life. I don't know how she managed to eat them, but I would never take one from her after that /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Buck, the worms are factory-installed. On occasion we have found forgotten candy that had wildlife present inside sealed wrappers. Same with some other snack items. A guy I work with was telling me that he had done control wiring in a number of places like slaughter houses, flour mills, etc. You probably don't want to hear some of the stories. Anyway, I don't recall all the details, but he explained that stored flour is run through a device at certain intervals which breaks insect eggs (and/or destroys larvae) to prevent hatching and major infestation. They never get all of them. Bon apetite........................chim

Yuck!!!

It is true that we eat numerous bugs each year. The bug doctor from the local Ag college came to a class I was in a few years ago and laid out about 3 1/2 quarts of various bugs in bottles and told us that is what we eat in a year. They come in as eggs and hatch in on the store shelf. Generally, they are stored in cooler temperatures to keep the eggs from hatching. He recommended that we put stuff in the deep freezer for two or three days which will kill the eggs.

I guess it is better to eat dead eggs than live bugs./w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif What the heck. It's all protein./w3tcompact/icons/tongue.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Von,

I don't know what kinda worm that is but I do know where
they come from and what happens to them with time. A few
years ago I would by some granola type stuff from bins at a
local market. I was making food bars or some such. Forgot
about a bag of the stuff that was left in the kitchen. Well,
one winter we started having those worms DROPPING from
the ceiling! /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif Dozens of worms all over the ceiling
falling down with little silk threads. Looked like the 82nd Bug
Battalian was invading our house! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif As we back tracked
them we found The Bag. The bag of "food" was full of the
worms. Well we went bonkers and cleaned up the cabinet.
It took HOURS since the bugs where all over the place.
Whew but at least there are no more bugs dropping from the
ceiling into our dinner plates.....

But that was not the end of the story.....

[Insert Jaws Movie Theme]

Then the moths showed up. Flittering around the house. Not
one or two but dozens. Constantly killing moths...... Well
after another cleaning session we found the little cocoons.
/w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

At first I wrote this up to just bad luck. Then one day I was
at the market again. Noticed something fly by my face. What
the heck was that! You guessed it. A certain small moth.
An obvious cousin to the horde in my house. Hmmmmm.....

I also buy Almonds from this market. Well Almonds ain't
cheap. They keep the nuts in big bins and I would get a
pound or so and put it in a thick zip lock bag the store
provided. I would toss the bag into The Cabinet. Well, one
night I need to make some toasted Almonds. So I get out a
skillet, turn on the burner, and pour some nuts in the pan.
I started moving the pan and notice something moving. But
moving in a way most unlike the nuts. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif You have a
picture that is a pretty good resemblence of what was inching
its way aournd the pan. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Took the Bag O Nuts back to the store. The mangler did not
even bat an eye when I SHOWED him the bag crawling with
worms. I talked to one of the workers and she said they had
a bad bug infestation. They would freeze the bulk items but
it was not helping.... /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

Believe it or not I still buy Almonds in bulk and even from this
store. But they go right into the freezer......

I think we ALL eat ALOT of bugs and bug eggs.... I KNOW I
have! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I wish I had gotten a lifetime supply of Almonds out of this
experience in BugDom. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Later,
Dan

About five years ago, I made rice for dinner. My middle daughter found a few nicely cooked worms in her portion of the rice and asked: "How come I have rice with ribs" Seems you could make out the segmented body and even the eyes. I still remind her about her rice with ribs. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

A number of years ago, while my son was playing a baseball game, I was snacking on a bag of those salted unshelled sunflower seeds. Seems they go good with baseball for some reason. I popped a couple in my mouth and proceeded to bite down to break the outside shell...didn't feel or taste quite right. Pretty salty but bitter and kinda soft-centered.

Pulled it out and it looked like some kind of bug at first, a little bigger than the unshelled seed. After studying it for a minute, I concluded that it was a mouse fetus. I always check my seeds now.

A few years back my wife and I were vacationing in the Niagra Falls area. While lunching at a small deli in Olde Niagra Village (Canada), I noticed my fork was not stabbing into a pile of frech-fries. Upon closer inspection it turned out to be a coated CIGARETTE BUTT! My wife nearly got sick at the table. When we confronted the cook/owner with the filter and tobacco remnants she did not even blink an eye and said "So??" We first asked for a refund, but, was told that we did indeed eat a few bites of our meals and some of the fries, so, she was going to pro-rate our bill. At that point I demanded a full refund, telling her that if she waits long enough she would have those same pieces we ate back up on her counter (the whole time my poor wife was dry heaving and was on the verge of fullfilling my prediction). She finally gave us our cash back (in Canadian money, not the US currency we paid with). She made some derogatory 'ugly-American' comment and we left.
Well, needless to say we are not smokers, but, we laugh about it now. Whenever we see cigarette butts on the ground we say "Look french-fries!" Never did determine if the butt was menthol... Furthermore, first vacation I ever took where I LOST weight :)

A good number of years back Consumer Reports did a review of candy bars. They found larvae in the almond containing bars and did a little research. They found out it is common. Their recommendation?? Enjoy the almond containg bars - just don't buy and eat them in a dark movie theatre.

I have a good friend that does some construction work at a well known breakfast pastry plant. He said that while he talked to a manager he mentioned the insects flying around. According to him the goverment inspectors allow a certain percentage of contamination of the ingredients. This guy doesn't bs.

They also did peanut butter. And don't even ask about the analysis of coffee they did.

Well, I contacted the makers of the candy bar, and they sent me $21.00 worth of coupons for more of their candy! My son was thrilled,...go figure?! So now he can get free big bags of M&M's. All for eating a worm egg or two! I told him to check the M&M's for bugs! but the kids don't care. Oh well, kids will be kids!!

Don't they have a contest going on right now. Something about finding a bag of all purple M&M's and win a million or something like that?
