Had a storm blow though last night and altho it only lasted 15 minutes or so it left a big mess in it's wake. Down power lines etc. I didn't loose power but a tree in my front yard lost a pretty good size limb. It snapped off clean and was just standing beside the trunk. If it wasn't for the folage I wouldn't have noticed it.
Awhile back I ordered one of those Bro Tek thumbs but hadn't had a chance to use it until today. It did pretty good, was like having a helper.

After tieing a rope to it and pulling it down with the BX23. I used the thumb to lift it out of the Mrs' flower garden then hold it up so I could cut it up for fire wood. Sure beat having to man handle it :D

I've been using my thumb to clean up some 8 foot plus logs dropped when we had our horse chesnut trimmed. I lift the logs, buck them into exact lengths, pick up the rounds and place them into the cart attached to my garden tractor, offload the rounds near the woodpile, later roll them into the FEL, lift the rounds, and neatly place them onto the woodpile with the FEL. They ease out of the FEL nearly perfectly in place, up to almost 6' high!

What a back saver!

I think I've used my thumb more than anything else.

Nice pictures!! I noticed that you had the tree at about 5 feet off the ground. Did you cut it up that high? All the chain saw safety tips I have seen recommend that you not cut at shoulder height.

No, no, no, rpeter, I cut about knee height - if one of those rounds fell and hit my toe... plus it is simply not safe cutting that high as you point out.

AND I wear chaps and other safety gear, even for something this "easy". Everyone should.

I should have included a picture of my other workhorse - CC3225 with 450+ hours

Well, I have noticed threads regarding thumbs before, but never paid close attention. So tell me who makes them (for BX22), how many $$ to purchase, how hard to install, hydraulically operated or ??.
Thanks, Terry

Richard (bird1968) sells his "Bro-Tek bolt-on thumb for a very reasonable price

http://members.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewUserPage&userid=bro-tek

and there is one selling on ebay now (closes 7/26/06)

I acquired my thumb through the dealer - a Rankin UAT-50 http://www.rankineqco.com/ . This welds on so it is permanent compared to bolt on devices. It cost me more than 2x the Bro-tek design. Dealer included the thumb in a package price and said that since they installed it then there would not be any backhoe warranty hassles should any arise. Voiding the warranty with a thumb was a huge concern and the dealer assured me that they would honor the warranty even with the thumb attached.

Bird1968:

I really like the design of your thumb. I could install it myself since I can't weld and taking the tractor to a welder is a hassle with my job schedule. No one around this area is open after 4-5PM or at all on weekends.

Do you have a model to fit a JD #7 hoe with the H beam construction?
