If they are around 3 ton units with furnace . They are in the ball park. There is alot work to be done ( in most cases) to replace your old units with the higher efficiency units That are now mandated. If your duct work is in a crawl space & you have duct board . Pay xtra for metal duct if you can get it. . If on nat gas & you are replacing furnaces go with a 90+ ( 93 - 96 % ) efficienty unit . Standard efficienty is around 80% . Also like I advised go ahead & purchase the 410 units..... If you intend to stay there all this will be worth the investment....Are the deals are like the large companies send out down here ?? Something like this >>>.Example>>>>WINTER SPECIAL >> we'll give you a FREE FURNACE with the purchase of one of our premium A/C units HA ! HA ! Summer special - we'll give you a FREE A/C with the purchase of a premium Furnace.. Look out folkes . If sounds too good to be true . Well you know the story:D

Are you like the song ?? If it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all gloom despair & agony on me:D

Just kiddin, I feel that way sometimes myself

Good luck to you

Hee Haw! I'm ashamed to say I used to watch that...but I did, and I bet most of the rest of you did too. I still know the number to Junior Samples used car lot....BR549!

But yes, I've been feeling a bit like Job lately....but that's pure self pity. It doesn't help that I'm tight as a tick (cheap, frugal, thrify, stingy...call it what you will). But, like I said, if these are my biggest problems life is good.:D

Anyway, I got two estimates on replacing the downstairs unit, both around $7,000. I 'bout fainted. I just can't do it right now. I have no idea what type of units were suggested. But, the ductwork under the house needs replacing. It is sagging, the insulation is coming off of it and it weeps when the humidity is high. Both quotes added about $3000 to redo ductwork. I don't know if these are competative prices. Both are from fairly large and well established HVAC companies around here. Some folks (who have no reason to know) have told me that sounds high. I'll shop it around a little more when it is time to pull the trigger.

You might want to look into ductless A/C. Mitsubishi Slim-Jim is one brand.

I looked into those for my cabin (900 sq ft). Way too pricey. Nearly as much as getting a regular system with heat.

I think my house is too big for that solution. It is not big at all by today's standards but I don't think you can heat 2500 sq ft with those units unless you buy a lot of them.

I think one of those units would be great in certain situations, especially older homes.
