Big AGs or smaller AGS R1 on a TC40DA

AG tires (big) fronts 8x16, rears 14.9 x 24, r1
Versus AG (small) front 7 x 16, rears 13.6 x 24

NH shows the front 7 x 16, rears 13.6 x 24 on their web page, but the AG tires (big) fronts 8x16, rears 14.9 x 24 are an option.

So, which ones should I go with? 99% of my use of the TC 40DA will be in dirt, wood chips FEL. Do I go with the bigger tires or the smaller ones?

I would go for the larger R1's, but either would work OK. Easier and much cheaper to spend $300-350.00 dollars now than doing it later.

Bob my understanding on tires is that the larger tire (width) would put less tire pressure on the ground and the narrow tire might therefore give you better traction. Maybe I'm all wet here but I'm comparing to a tracked vehicle with large ground contact but less compaction because of the surface area meeting the ground.

Can you elaborate why you would go with the big R1s?

Mike, sort of like snow tires? Thin tire can "cut" through the snow and get grip on the road surface below?? You can help me try to reason this out, as you can tell I don't really know /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Let me argue it the other way. Larger tire will not "sink" into dirt, chips; the larger tire will keep the frame out of the muck, but still allow the treads to dig into the soil???? If the smaller AG sinks into the dirt, mud, chips, etc., then the tread will still grip, just at a "lower" level in the dirt.

You can see I am unsure. Your help is always appreciated.

Defintitely get the bigger for flotation reasons mentioned, but also ground clearance. Being new to tractors when I bought mine, I unkowingly opted for the standard (small) tires due to the overall tractor price being cheaper. I thought the tractors at other dealers were comparable...not!

Check the wheel differences also, along with my smaller tires also came less durable wheels i.e.,
the rear disc to rim marriage used 4 bolts compared to the bigger tires 6 bolts. I had bolt loosening problems around 50-100 hours which I cured by making spacers and utilizing 8 bolts per wheel.

also the larger front tires used heavier gauge wheels stamped with an offset to increase stance and mud packing space between wheel and hub.

Go big, better loader capacity as well as better traction. I have gone with the largest R1's on all the Ford / New Hollands I have bought over the years and never regretted it.

Bob, I would go with the wider Ags. Check the ply rating on the tires. Industrial tires have a higher ply rating. I'm not sure about Ags, but that wider tire might also have more plys. I also think you could put industrial tires on the front and wide Ags on the rear. That would give you the best loader tires up front where they are needed. Unless you work in MFWD and on pavement all the time, mixing tire types is not an issue. If I had it to do over again, that's how I'd have had my tractor set up.

Bob, I see the consensus seems to be suggesting the larger tires. I'm not sure I'd agree, as I think "floatation" in general, when there is not enough weight behind it, is a bad thing. With a loader out front, if you go with the bigger tires, you probably won't have much trouble with applying adequate weight, and thus traction, to the front tires, but I'd give serious consideration to loading the rears with RimGuard. The Class III (TC35-TC45) tractors are just not all that heavy for such wide tires.
