I'd like to know how they were made? And when? What kind of steel?

I could CNC mill a lot of the features, but a wire EDM would be best for the square holes.

Just for interest, what do you think the cost would be to make one using those methods?

LOL, a heck of a lot more than $2200 for sure.

You might have trouble finding someone who'd make a pair for less than $10000. Wire EDM is slow and expensive, but very accurate.

Too bad the OP is not local. A friend here has an older wire EDM (electrical discharge machine) that is free for
the taking. Of course, it has to be picked up. The price has been too high for the past few years as we have
tried to find a taker. It was used for years in his shop making prototype implantable devices for bio-tech field.

A mega-shop with all that space may be just the place of such a machine.....

You have no idea how unfortunate it isnt available locally. I have a good friend who did regular maintenance and troubleshooting on two EDMs before he retired from the government dockyard.

Amongst other things he knew the machines inside out.

How about Security Systems?? What are you guys using??

I selected an old proven system. Little long in the tooth but still appears effective.

Very nice, where I live is pretty safe, although I really should get better about locking the shop. Thinking about adding a camera system.

Similar to TMGT, I don't have any system. I was in my last shop 9 years and never locked the doors. Been in this one almost a year and haven't locked it. Come to think of it, I don't know where the keys are?? Builder said something about keying the shop and house alike. Maybe Terry's got one.

My deceased neighbor collected Marlin Lever Action Rifles. Actually, I'd call his collection a museum. 450 rifles. Had serial number 13 of every edition except one. Displayed in an underground concrete vault/room, about 40x30 ft. He had this John Wayne cutout standing in the corner. Told me one day I could have it after he was gone. I never mentioned it to his widow. The other day I was down there helping her with a sump pump issue in the vault. She said you can have John if you want? I hugged her and repeatedly told her how much I appreciated getting it. So now he's proudly displayed. Steve would be happy.
