If you can do without the HST it opens a lot of possibilities. I don't think a gear tractor is that hard to get used to, esp given some instruction on it. A 4WD JD 790 (27hp) with FEL new would be around 11k-12k or so and has the ground clearance you want.

To really see the difference in loader visibility, jump on a skid steer for a few minutes. When I get back on my Kubota I really notice how much I lean to look at the sides so I can see that bucket /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
My old('87 era) B8200 is square hood, with sqaure frame loader aint too bad to work with, but a slope hood would be nice. Too bad those "new" Farmall's don't have the offset culitvision like the A-B-Cub series; then you could see the bucket /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Visibility is a very nice and important feature. It is more comfortable for the operator if you aren't straining your neck all day watching the FEL. It is also safer if you can see everything without obstructions.
Here's a link to a video of what it looks like from the operator's seat of a Power Trac PT425 while changing from the palllet forks to the small bucket with teeth. The visibility is outstanding, compared to a tractor with a hood out front. It's kind of grainy, but it gets the point across. The video is in windows media format and is about 360K in size.
(On a side note, that's a complete change of implements in 28 seconds, while holding a video camera in my right hand and operating everything with my left hand. That includes the steering wheel, the loader joystick and quick attach lever, which are both on the right side of the steering wheel, and never getting out of the operator's seat. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif )

I can see it now...FLASH...MossRoad kills pet/wife/child/house/garage/etc/ because he was looking through a video camera and operating with one hand. LOL. I have 30 acres and use a B7500 Kubota.
For hogging check out a picture I had posted. The field on the right looked like the left brush side before brush hogging. The trail to the pasture looked like the rest of the woods.

Well, I think I've come to the conculsion that..
1. For what I want.. I cant afford new. I would want it big enough to haul some good size trees, but convenient enough for my wife to drive. I really think that I'm into the 20k neighborhood. Hard to justfiy
2. As for inexpensive tractors, they are gear drive, and used farm tractors. That is fine.. I can wait till the time is right, and get my wood when the conditions are right.
3. The wife is gonna have to suck it up and drive the gear transmission when she NEEDS to get out of the drive.
4. If I have a big, diesel burning machine... I will have to fight off my dad and brother to stay on it. Either of them would come over on a snowy day and plow my driveway.
Looks like a 6 to 10k farm tractor for me... maybe a little more. All kinds of cheap horsepower.. not so clean and shiny that I would be worried about beating it out through the brush. That will give me plenty of power to run any kind of attachment I will ever use.
Can't wait to close the deal on the land.. and have a EXCUSE to start tractor shopping. Year 1 is just going to be cleaning up blow downs and deadfalls. Think I can do all of that with my dad's artic cat 500.
I'll have lots of fun looking for the best buy on a used farm machine.
