Big lot, little tractor??

A 7800 with FEL and box blade should come in at about $15k plus tax. Not much more than what you are talking about and you get new with hydro. Forget the backhoe, forget the midmount mower (you've got your Cub), get an inexpensive boxblade and bushhog at Tractor Supply and be happy. Wife happy too, and that is also very important. Who knows, if you play this right (Honey, I bought this new tractor so that you could use it ...) you might be able to get some more toys down the road. Doesn't sound like you have much time to tinker with machinery and a tractor that is ready to "fart around" whenever you are is really, really nice.

Well.. I used up my "I got this tractor so you could use it card" with the Cub!!

I fly a corportate jet for a living. I am gone one week, then home a week. I like tinkering. No kids, just two dogs.

I just think that 10k for a used tractor, and 5k in maintenance reserve and implements (lots of implements) would allow me to get more use out of the tractor. The not shiny and new factor would allow me to feel better about USING it.

I realize that a larger farm tractor is not going to be as convenient for getting in and around the woods.. But I'm not looking to use it to mow the lawn, or snowblow around the house.. I've got the cub for that.

This year was real mild for snow. My wife only works at home now (a professional photographer) She doesn't HAVE to get out of the driveway by 8am like before.

I think she will use it very little.

With the price difference.. I could even have a grand sitting aside for a occasional small excavator rental or other (better and easier to hire out) kind of jobs.

Anyone think a two wheel drive with good chains and weights wouldnt work for this?

A dumb question.. Do all farm tractors have either a "posi traction" type rear end? Or a pedal type differential lock? Or do you have to worry about one wheel only getting the power?

Well, sort of. I have seen a positraction type, but if I'm not mistaken, they're pretty rare. And many do not have a differential lock, as such, however they nearly all, if not all, have separate pedals for right and left brake, so if one wheel spins, you can step on the brake for that one wheel in order to force the power to the other wheel.

Thanks.. I never really thought of that.

Like I said before.. I was in my twentys when my dad got rid of the farm machinery. I was flying around as the captain of a million plus dollar airplane.. But couldn't be trusted with the 40HP AC farm tractor!!

Now I realize he was just hogging all the seat time!!

Looking forward to buying an old beast to play on.
