Well I thought I'd share this with my fellow TBNer's.

Here's a few pictures of the Yellow and White Morrells I found yesterday. These being the largest I've picked this year. They weighed 3lbs 2oz. all together. Hmm Hmm good! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Wow, I wish I could come up with a haul like that. Up here in BC I can find a few little guys like the ones in your bottom row. They seem to come up totally at random and in the oddest places like in the middle of a gravel path or on a pile of sand not to mention they're **** hard to see sometimes. So what kind of area do you find yours in? Any particular type of surroundings that they like?

Reminds me of many days ago going out with milk buckets and picking morrels.

Then scrambled eggs with morrels and home cured/smoked bacon.

I just ate breakfast, and after reading this....I am hungry all over again. With the size of some of those, you just shuffle your feet through the woods until you trip on something, then hang onto it as you fall so as to not get too banged up. Here in southern Indiana, we used to say a Hoosier was a guy dribbling a basketball around the Indianapolis 500 track, looking for mushrooms. Then of course, there are stories about those guys that had to use chainsaws....but I won't go there!!

Steve,
I usually find the smaller black and gray mushrooms early in the spring as for they come up before the bigger yellow and white morrells.

I was actually looking around an old fallen wild cherry tree and jumped off the log and about tripped on the biggest 2. I thought it was because of the big fallen wild cherry that they where growing right there. But as I looked out in front of me where about 6 more of them caught my focus; I noticed a tall dead Box Elm tree that must have died last year sometime.

The bark from the tree had all fallen off. Now from my knowledge of growing up hunting mushrooms with my Dad for the last 15 years I've learned a lot. And it seems like usually every time we find a recently dead box elm we find these nice yellow and white morrells. So if I ever see dead Elms in the woods during mushroom season I tend to get a little excited.

I found these mushrooms on State forest Land. Turkey season is in now and I can't believe no one had run into them before me. It's a well-pressured area that hunters usually frequent. Lucky me. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Egon you guys do have to use buckets and laundry baskets up North to hunt mushrooms. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I've never got the chance growing up but my Father use to go to Michigan every year to get the nice morrells like this. He's got pictures just like you said with laundry baskets full of mushrooms. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Haven't seen any in my woods yet, but I haven't looked real good. Have a few dead standing elms too. I'll have to take a look on my off days coming up. Thanks for the reminder.

Wow!!! Some of those are HUGE! I've only managed to find small to medium ones when I lived back in MN. I havn't had a chance to hunt for them at our new place yet. I guess it's time to take a walk in the woods. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Enjoy!
