Big Torque Wrench

How would that increase the torque at actual readings?

Torque is a factor of distance from pivot point and force in direction of rotation. The longer the handle, the bigger the force. The right angle doesn't matter, the force is still transferred. However, if the wrench is set to ratchet at a certain torque, added torque won't help as the wrench will just ratchet under the added force.

extension takes less effort to achieve torque, but doesnt multiply it

If the wrench is set to break over / click at 250 lb-ft it will still click at. 250 lb-ft unless said extension is placed between the socket and wrench drive head. Doubling the handle length would still leave you with a 250 lb-ft wrech
I think he meant doesnt.:confused3:

I have the big Tekton wrench, and it is a good quality tool.

I ended up with a Sears 1/2 inch torque wrench that goes to 250 pounds. As I remember it was around $200. I have no idea how well its calibrated - I'm certain its a lot more accurate than any guess I could make. I know one thing for d**n certain - I'm don't need the quality of a 3/4 drive Snap On torque wrench nor the going price.

There is quite a range for the torque value on those bolts. 250 foot lbs means that you are pushing with a weight of 250 lbs on the end of a one foot long wrench. 125 lbs on a two foot long wrench and so on. How much do you weigh? If you weigh between the torque values listed, then your weight on the end of a one foot long wrench is the correct torque.

Get a two or three foot long breaker bar and figure out how hard you have to push on the end and go from there. You will be close enough on your final torque values.

Hhmm I think my Kobalt torque wrench goes to 250 or 260 ftlbs? Its only half inch drive. To bad the lug nuts on the truck need around 450 ftlbs. Those 3/4" torque wrenches are mucho dinero!

The torque multiply was only for the Snap On TQ-XX series which were a dial type that used some sort of flex steel flat blade that drove the pivot that moved the needle.
The Snap On TQ series dates back to WW2 and relied on the user's eyes to stop and not a 'click'.
I have a couple of that style and once needed them calibrated and to my surprise they were very accurate even 50 yrs later.

I needed mine to calibrate slip clutches on aircraft autopilot systems and as such the needed to be calibrated annually.
With dial type you can read existing torque settings while click style is more of a 'go-no go'.

Oh okay that makes sense

I have this torque wrench from this company for the tractor and my truck wheels. CDI 2502MRMH
I have also bought two others for other specs while working on things. They come with a certified test sheet and I had one checked locally and it was as the test sheet specified. Prices are reasonable and the wrenches are built well. The person at the local test place told me the CDI brand is a division of Snap On. Just thought I'd throw this out if someone is shopping around.
