Black Smoke at start up and under load

If your exhaust points towards (or near) a panel, that's normal also. I replaced my stub exhaust for a vertical pipe since it was blowing the exhaust on my loader arms making it black but what was worse is that it deflected the exhaust back in my face.

Good Q. I bought a 4100 w/ 1080 hours and likewise there is a good sized "puff" of black smoke on startup, and certainly if I put a load on, there is some smoke. My understanding, under load, is that the fuel mixture is a bit rich for a moment and thus the black smoke. Are there any other symptoms of engine problems? I think that is what we are both asking. On warm days, 70+, it fires right up, so I'm taking that to mean the compression is good. Also, my understanding of these 3 cy Yanmar engines is they can run 2000+ hours easily. Any recommendations to get the most hours from them? Is 4000 hours reachable? Should I use fuel additive? Just looking for ways to max the live of this 4100. Thanks

CT - First, don't consider the black smoke a problem as it's normal on start-up and under heavy load. To discuss any other potential symptoms/issues, the number is probably too many to list but most are infrequent or rare. You could look through some other posts/threads to see what others have encountered. If you haven't already done so, do a search for 4100 for specific model information.

I would say that you could easily expect 2000 hours and probably closer to 4000 hours if you utilize appropriate preventative and scheduled maintenance. Although my JD isn't the 4100, I just do the tasks as defined in the owners manual and perform routine inspections looking at any potential issues.
For fuel additives, oil... check out the posts in the "Oil, Fuel and Lubricants" section of the forum.

Back to the smoke, I assume its mainy just a hint to back off, you are pushing it to hard. If you operate it for extended time with lots of smoke I assume you would just get carbon build up?

First, sorry to hear about your hyd issue. Mine is gear so I can't help you there.
Re. the black smoke I'm not a diesel mechanic so I don't know the specifics. Just everything I've seen and heard says it's normal. Watch a loaded semi climb a hill if you want to see lots of black smoke.

Actually, the black smoke is caused by not burning fuel. The soot is carbon, the result of an incomplete burn. That said, a little smoke is normal for a diesel, and alot of smoke, as brandon07 pointed out, can be a lot of fun in a truck (if it is made on purpose). White or grey smoke is generally a sign of a problem
