Had a quick look underneath today and I can easily move the diff lock pedal up and down easily but there's nothing holding the pedal in the up position.
Looks like I need to remove the deck to see the majority of the linkage.

Look under jdparts.com for the x740, and under alphabetical "differential lock pedal and linkage".

There you will see the torsion spring, part #M145953 that may be either missing, broken, or not positioned correct to return the pedal.

Haha.... oops!
Nothing to see here folks...... I didn't realise that the diff lock pedal went down when you put the brake on!! [proper noob mistake]

That's a good one... glad it was an easy fix. I recall seeing my pedal all the way down once and the thought went through my mind "what's broken now". :)

Took the mulching kit off today and tried it in 8-10" of lush damp grass - WOW!!
I wasn't hanging around and the 740 coped easily. I guess, when not mulching, you should try to cut going in an anticlockwise direction so the cut grass is thrown out and not back onto the grass yet to be cut.

yea, that is always good and prevents a lot of clogging under the deck.
even alternating rows is better than blowing the same windrow over and over.....
