Well crap. I am very sad to hear of this. I don't think there is much I can add or help with.

The IH Magnum series have an auto shutdown that will activate for several things, there is also a bypass button that can be pushed to keep it running there is a beeper that goes off for a few seconds before it shuts down. We have only had one of them that tripped and that operator couldn't reach the button fast enough after he figured out what was going on. He got lucky it shutdown just before he would have turned down hill which could have resulted in a runaway with serious problems. So they are available, or were I don't believe they are a good idea I do like a loud buzzer along with the lights and or gauges.

I don’t think a gear or HST tractor is going to roll away when it shuts down. And you’ll reach the same results with a lot more damage in another minute when the engine seizes.

GST (or whatever a wet clutch transmission is called by your manufacturer of choice) will roll away if the engine shuts off as they rely on hydraulic pressure to keep the clutch engaged.

Now that's a kick in the back pockets...ouch. :(
Before doing anything talk w/dealers for they might know a better way.

I doubt an oil pressure gauge is going to add much to the cost. They already have a sending unit and and indicator. It would not be a new system added.

When I'm using my road grader and hear anything a bit different, I first check the gauges. If the oil pressure said 0 I would be shutting it down pronto. It's a 1974 model I've had for 8 years. In that whole time the gauge reads in the 40s on start up and in the low 20s after it's warmed up. I've considered using heavier oil but I suspect it's the start up where that would be a bad idea and also where the wear is the greatest. I don't want to line those two things up to coincide.

The gauge wouldn't cost much at all, but what I was talking about was the automatic shutdown. That would cost. Additional computer development and test costs in particular.

Still waiting on places to open so I can make some calls.

Liking the looks of countrysalesand service.....not too far from me.

Kubota V243TME-AG-E3 Rebuilt Engine: Kubota L524, L574, MX51 Tractor

But the price is steep.

Bout a grand less for a tier 2 but don't know if other things have changed to make that impossible????

Kubota V243TME-AG-E2 Rebuilt Engine: Kubota L574 & M59 Tractor

Both listed to fit the 5740....but only tier 3 listed for mx??

Still want to call some shops. See what kind of turn around for rebuilding mine.

$4700 seems a bit steep for a reman....which is just a rebuilt one only without the wait.

I guess it's possible that the only damage is #1 rod and corresponding crank journal. And I could rebuild this one for cheap. But so many places for metal in the oil to have done damage, turbo, cam, balancers, etc.

And since the same v2403 turbo engine is used in 51-60 hp range.....new or reman I might get 60hp out of the deal

Sorry to hear of your troubles LD...
I would check with EPS first to see what a replacement would run...
I'm guessing north of 5K...
Option two is to get a good machinist and local mechanic to do the work...
Cost should be a little less but not much less...
I am sure someone within a reasonable distance is really good and can do the work...

Last year I had to replace my 6.0 in my Chevy and just last month put in a rebuilt transmission in my old Buick...
Both were done by locals that have been in the business a long time...
My mechanic was a certified GM tech and has been a local garage owner for over 25 years...
My transmission re-builder is a 35 year veteran...
Both of these guys have been in the same location all those years and have stellar reputations...
You don't stay in business that long at the same place if you don't do good work...

Good luck and keep us updated...

The oil should drain down to the sump, get picked up by the pump and forced through the oil filter, thus keeping debris out of the rest of the engine. Unless, the filter got clogged so much, and if it has a bypass, that it went into bypass mode.

How much metal do you think was floating around in any rebuilt diesel you buy, before it was rebuilt? UNLESS they took it all the way down and washed the block before starting the rebuild?

I think I'd start out with my own block, pour/flush with diesel from the top down with the pan off, and then change the oil/filter after rebuilding/running 15 minutes or so...

I from time to time wish there was an oil pressure gauge, but in reality I doubt it would be much help. For one, I am not staring at my dash while I am out working the tractor so I likely wouldn't see it after start up or the occasional look. Secondly, if you happen to look at the dash and see the gauge at zero, you may well be to late. A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away I worked in a auto garage. If you would have asked someone what there gauge read when they had a problem they likely wouldn't have had a clue, or they wouldn't have known what it was 5 seconds before the problem either.

An auto shutdown is an actual benefit. As soon as the computer sees a low pressure issue (not zero, but low) it shuts down. Stops things before the problem gets worse.

As someone else said above though, there are lots of things I wish would have been included in my tractor though I would have complained even more about the higher price.

Won't say it couldn't happen to me .....but probably not.
I spent 39 years of my working life scanning engine instruments.
If anything was seriously questionable, it was time to look for a place to land.
I will always be a gauge guy .......it is an old habit/necessity, so ingrained that I could not change it if I wanted to..
