Does anyone know of a good website to post some questions (and get some good awnsers ) about boats? I have a mercruiser outdrive that grenated some gears and am trying to see how hard it is to rebuild one.

Is it possible you hit something or is it just wearing out? If you think you hit something your homeowners insurance should pay for it? I know mine will. Otherwise, about 8 years ago my dad and I checked into rebuilding ours and we found that buying a rebuilt was cheaper and faster. I don't know prices today so check both ways.

THCRI, no, I bought this boat used. it is a 1987 3.0 litre. Boat had not been used for a couple of seasons, I changed all the fluids, including the outdrive oil, It was full of oil. Outdrive seized up, drained lots of water and a little oil out of it, top drive gears missing some teeth. found a messed up seal on the driveshaft. Previous owner said he replaced waterpump not to long ago. O well. Have manual, looks like I need some special tools to do the job. trying to see if it is worth doing myself or just exchange . trying to see if the aftermarket parts are any good, messed up the upper housing pretty bad. OEM overhaul around $2000 plus core

A 1987 3.0 Litre Mercrusier should have an Alpha 1 outdrive. I seem them go for ~ $1,200-1,500 rebuilt all the time. Used ones can be had for ~$1000.00. Watch the classifieds and get some "Boat Trader" type magazines for your area.
