You have the Hobbs type meter. These have been used for many years in aircraft and tractors as well as many other types of equipment.

Most will say that rated speed is necessary to get one hour's use in one hour. Anything below will be less, and above will be more. It is a great way to determine the true USE of an engine.

These are sometimes also simply called analog hour meters.
The newer digital meters run as long as there is power going to the alternator. I don't think they give as accurate an idea of the wear of an engine as they measure every moment it's on rather than reflect the different RPM usages.

Everything that I have located on the Hobbs meter indicates that it runs whenever the master switch is turned on, others are switched on by an oil pressure switch. Every hour they run = an hour in actual running time of the engine, there is no mention of an in between. Hobbs Meter

And directly from the source:
Hobbs Meter

The exception I take with the everything2 web link is that it indicates the Hobbs meter is driven by oil pressure. This is incorrect. It is driven by a voltage source. The oil pressure closes an electrical switch that is in series with the power feed wire. The master switch still must be on to provide power to the oil pressure activated switch.

Thats the way my B2400 meter works 1 hour running at PTO speed and the meter turns over 1 hour, less than Pto speed and it takes longer to turn 1 hour on the meter.

Hobbs is a brand name not a meter type although they are well known for their hour meters. The Hobbs hour meters found in aircraft measure "true" hours whenever the master switch is turned on. There is typically another hour meter located within the tachometer that measures hours based on engine RPM.

I don't know the official name for an hour meter based on engine RPM but I have heard them called useage meters.

Hobbs is a brand of hourmeter and in the Cessna 150 and 172 owned by the flying club I belong to, there is an oil pressure switch so the meter only runs when the master switch is on and the engine is running. It records in increments of 1/10 of an hour or 6 minutes. It is the meter rental fees are based on. The hour meter built into the tachometer varies according to the RPM the engine is running at. We refer to it as "tach time" and is the time used for oil changes and TBO or Time Before Overhaul. To me the tach time is the same as a "proof meter" on a tractor.

PS How did this get so far from the question about ads and where did ( Machine has a 1300 hours, however a percentage of this was idling or driving) come from in the first place. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
