I have an old John Deere MX-6 Rotary Cutter. The blades are secured by one bolt and washer. The blades turn counter-clockwise and the blade adapter continuously loosens. Any idea how to secure this bolt. I even spot welded the bolt and washer. This didn't last long and finally the bolt fell out. I have tried some lock washer chemicals but nothing seems to help. Any ideas?

Two, both require you get back under and take another look. If there is a hole through the bolt, it takes a crown nut. Once the crown nut is threaded to its limit, you insert a split pin through the hole in the bolt to keep the nut from backing off.

The other possibility is that you're trying to tighten a worn out self-locking nut. They come in two varieties, all metal and plastic insert. Your answer may simply be to replace the nut(s)

A very distant third option is a second nut to lock the first nut in place, but I doubt there's enough exposed thread for you to do that.

I agree. More than likely, you lost the cotter pin in the bolt

Not familiar with the MX-6, but Im assuming these are large shoulder bolts holding swinging knives. They must be extremely tight or else they move and damage themselves and everything they mate with - and in the process loosen. If they are 1" or more tighten them to stall on a good, well fed, 3/4 impact tool rated to 1000ft-lb. Either that or lean hard on an 8foot cheater pipe extension. If the shoulders and mating seats have been damaged it will still be debatable whether they will stay tight without cotter pins. The problem with cotters of course is they become packed with debris and are a real job to get out when you need to.

Are you talking about the center bolt that holds the whole blade assembly tot he gerbox shaft or the bolts that hold the blades?

If it is the center bolt, then you need to ensure that you have the correct torque. If you just tighten it up, it will loosen. If you torque it properly, the bolt will clamp and should not loosen.

Review the torque spec in your manual and then torque accordingly. Check you torque after an hour or so.

That's a special bolt that has a hex shaft that fits into the hex female blade holder. If the hex bolt is worn put a new W38054 part no. bolt in there. If the female hex is worn out, that's another problem. The hex keeps the bolt from turning. Since the blade is loose on the bolt flare, the bolt is just a journal for the blade to spin on. My guess is that someone burned or broke off the bolts to change or sharpen the blades and replaced them with just a plain round shaft bolt. The hex shape keeps it from turning and eliminates loosening torque in the nut/bolt combo. The parts view for this clearly shows what's going on.
