I use Internet Explorer at work. When I came back today, all the favorites were missing. They were all there friday. No folders, nothing. Found them all to be on a folder on the desktop. I don't know how that happened, there are several others that use this same computer. Is there a way to get them back on the IE browser?

I suspect they were deleted purposefully or accidently.

You can go into your Windows directory (folder) and there should be a Favorites folder. I expect you'll find it empty though.

If you're running Windows XP, you could try restoring to an earlier iteration. If you're running any other version, there is no way to recover your bookmarks if they've been deleted.

I assume you are talking about links under your Favorites.

If they are in a folder on your desktop, just copy and paste them back into your Favorites folder under Windows or under Documents and Settings/”yourname”/ Favorites depending on how the computer is set up.

The bookmarks are all on the desktop in a seperate folder. The folder says favorites & if I open it up all the bookmarks are there. If I click on one it opens up the internet page that it is bookmarked for. I've been messing around trying to find out how they were sent to the desktop. Surely there must be a way somone did that, I'm thinking it was a mistake. I'm also hoping there is a way to send them back. Any more ideas?

Easy to do in Windows Explorer, just drag the folder from the DeskTop Folder back over to the Windows Folder. Holding the Shift key down will move it, holding the Ctrl key will copy it.

If the computer has more than one user account set up they may be in a folder under the user account. Maybe under a Profiles directory in the Windows Directory. Different versions of Windows store the user data in slightly different places.

I can copy them but I can't paste them. My options when I click on favorites is, add to favorites, which adds the present web page. The other option is organize favorites. I tried adding a new folder & then tried to paste it in there but that doesn't work either.

Some bunny could have I suppose tried, to move theirs and caused this. Some things when done by one, effect all users. Though I doubt this is one and when you do some thing that may effect others Windows will usually tell you.

Try the import/export option under, file in Explorer and see if you can just slip them back in...

other wise asking an IT person at work would might be your best bet. Since it's a shared PC. IT may have done it for some reason, them selves... or some one just bo bo'd and doesn't no how to fix it. If you can't paste them back into the IE file. You probable do not have the access rights to do mods to system files. Such as Admin privilages, giving that you share this pc you are probably user level access or power user at most... which allows you to add programs but not modify system files.

I think your on the right track. I got all the default bookmarks placed back in, still trying to get the personal ones back in. We have Windows NT. Time for a shift change. I'll check back tomorrow.

The pasting procedure needs to be done in Windows Explorer or My Computer, not on Internet Explorer. Didn’t make that clear I guess.

If they are in a folder on your desktop, just copy and paste them back into your Favorites folder under Windows or under Documents and Settings/”yourname or user-id”/ Favorites depending on how the computer is set up.

I finally got them moved. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Got one folder moved & didn't even realize how I did it. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gifCouldn't get the others to transfer & was about ready to go nuts. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gifAnyhow, if anyone is interested this is how I ended up doing it. Opened up the favorites folder that someone had placed on the desktop. Signed on to internet explorer. Clicked favorites on IE & went to the folder that I wanted. Right clicked then selected open. Split the two windows & drug the stuff from the desktop into the open window of internet explorer. I imagine there are other ways but this is the best I could do. To tell you the truth, I don't even know how I figured this out, but somehow it worked. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Glad you worked it out. Me I fixed my IE by switching to DireFox by Mozilla... I have never been fond of IE and was originally a Netscape user till AOL bought it and hosed it up.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
