Anyone know the size of or name of the hydraulic motor on the boom mower. Was thinking about making something similar for my hill side that is to steep to mow by hand for this years winter project. I have been using a saber samurai sickle bar and it works but not the cut I am looking for. Once I get what I want put together I will try to sell the sickle bar. I am just going to replace the sickle bar with the mower. The mower will have large caster wheels for height and maneuverability.

Do you have a pit of the sickle bar?

Has anyone used a PT boom mower? It seems kinda narrow.

I looked at it. A big challenge is the lever action of the outboard weight. If you can count on resting the weight on wheels you are OK, but I have my doubts on being always able to do it.

The message that I got from PT is that is designed to mow ditches from the solid ground of a road.

If you have a working sickle bar mower, unless you have saplings that are causing you to shear pins, I am not sure that a boom mower would be an improvement.

I believe Charlie Iliff has (had?) a sickle bar mower on an outboard arm. I think he used it both for ditches/hillsides, and for "mowing" hedges and trail brush.

YMMV, of course.

All the best,

Peter

I found a hashed Sickle Mower for a 3pt in a ravine on the property. Not sure why someone would chuck it down... Transmission is solid, but the bar itstelf is rusted beyond repair. It sits on a shelf waiting for me to one day make it into a hydraulic version. But the bar and teeth are the hangup for sure.

Try tossing it in an electrolysis tank. It works wonders on removing rust and freeing things up. It has worked wonders for me.
You can use a kiddie pool or a large diameter PVC pipe as a tank.
Google it, or PM me.
All the best,
Peter

I never ran my boom mower but I moved it plenty of times with the tractor. I never felt any issues with the counter weight but I have an 1850. But I do suspect it is hard to adjust the mower for an even cut as you are moving along - probably best to "set it and forget it" as much as possible.

X2 for electrolysis...

I did our iron porch handrails by making a 5' x 6' box out of 2X12's and lining it with heavy plastic sheeting. I used the arc welder as a power source. They got very clean...

Basically I drag the sickle bar sticking out the side of my tractor along the embankment on a long 3 piece by 2 inch sq. bar. It's hard to explain but how it works is as I raise my front end the sickle bar it mows closer to the tractor but as I lower it, it goes further away. It is not on any hydraulic arm or any thing like a boom mower. Just think of it as a Z shape with the top attached to the quick attach and the bottom is on wheels. It works surprisingly well just the cut is not what I want. I don't know if it is the cutter teeth being not close enough to each other. It cuts the big fat stuff great but grasses seem to slip through. My embankment is almost 400 feet long a goes from 6 feet to 15 feet in height and it is really steep. I just would like to know what the hydraulic motor is on the boom mower. Is it the same as what is on the mower deck. From picture on Power-tracs web site it doesn't look like it.
