there is only one guy i would lend my tractor to, the rest if anybodys asks, i just tell them that due to liability ins. i can not lend it out ! as i would be responsible for any dammage or if they got hurt. most people will accept that.

The ONLY person that I would ever let borrow my tractor(s) would be my Dad.
I would also Never ask to borrow anyones tractor or equipment. I would drive to the nearest rental yard first.

I'm struggling with a similar situation. In the past, there were a couple of us that worked together to keep our private road clear, about 400 yards long. This year, the year I bought a decent enough size tractor to handle it myself (TC24D with blade and blower), everyone has turned into snowbirds heading to Florida. That leaves me, a widow, and a retired guy next door who would give you the shirt off his back and has always brought my Gravley back from mowing full of gas and cleaner than when he took it, but only has a walk behind snowblower. I'm considering showing him how to at least run the tractor with the blade to open the road for those occasions when we're away on ski trips or holiday weekends visiting family.

I don't charge anyone for plowing the road, and I wouldn't worry too much about someone being snowed in for a few hours. I'll get to it when I get to it. But what if they need to get a fire truck or ambulance in quickly? /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif I would feel pretty bad if the only reason they couldn't get through was because I had my tractor under lock and key. For that matter, if I'm away during a storm, I'm going to need to get down the road somehow when I return. I'd rather be able to drive than walk through snow up to my knees.

I'm sick as a dog right now with a foot of snow predicted for tonight. Maybe that will help me make up my mind.

I don't loan my tractor out, but I do loan implements out. If my tractor is needed, I go with the tractor.

My dad, my father in law & myself pool our implements (and other tools), and try not to buy duplicates. There's no reason for 3 box blades in the same family within 25 minutes of each other. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif This allows the tractor budget to go much further and keep the wives happy. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There's not many other people I'll loan anything larger than a hammer to.

Nope, I never lend my tractor.....or any of my vehicles for that matter. I am willing to help anyone at any time and all they have to do is amuse my two kids while I do it. I'm still having a hard time getting it through their heads that the fun I have doing something with my tractor is payment enough for any job they might need done! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I agree, one time a guy out the road came out to my house and wanted to borrow my stock trailer to pick up a bull he had bought at the stockyards(lucky he caught me when I was home).
I told him no, but I would go get the bull for him.He says" if anything happens to it he would be responsible" he did not seem to understand, regardless if he was responsible I did not want anything to happen,if anyone was going to tear it up let it be me then I could blame no one but myself.

Another thing to consider is liability. If anyone gets hurt on your machinery you are responsible. If anyone else gets hurt from whoever borrowed your machine you are responsible.

A friend of mine learned this the hard way last year. He loaned his tractor and disc out to a "friend". While this guy was using the tractor his son fell off and the rear tire ran over him breaking his pelvis. When the insurance company found out it wasn't his tractor they denied his personal health insurance saying the owner of the tractor was liable. He SUED my friend and won!! Not only for the medical bills but for pain, suffering, and loss of use.

My brother had the same thing happen. They had a barbeque over at their house. Some of the boys got his four wheelers and were riding them WITHOUT permission. The one boy flipped it and broke his arm. That boys parents also sued and won against my brother.

HAPPY DAYS!! (i think)

My buddy said he ran it well after dark to get the required grading done before the rain came today. He ran mine and his son ran his JD1020 with a box blade, did a heckofa lot of work between them in a short time. Brought it home this morning cleaned up and full of fuel. Haven't checked for "concealed damage" but I doubt I'll find any. He's not the kind of guy you would expect that from.

Offered to pay and I declined. Reached in his truck and pulled out a fifth of Crown Royal, said "well take this with my thanks".

Hate I missed out on the seat time due to the funk, but maybe a touch of his gift will ease the pain /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
