Bought a Yamaha Terrapro

So it would be a little tough to make anything that was not made for that machine work on it.

Roger it looks that way. The belt routing is absolutely crazy under that hood. The instructions is on a decal behind the back cover. It wasn't as hard as it looks to put it on, but you do have to follow the directions exactly or it will shred the belt in the first five minutes. My next project is the 42" brush cutter. It slings two blades just like it's big brother. Supposedly it will cut down brush up to one inch. -robert

Ditto on the belt routing on the FM48. I bought a belt at NAPA for it, put it on and it lasted about 5min. I must have gotten one to many twists in the belt... That was 40 dollars that went away quick... I bought an oem belt, put it on and it has been working fine. I use the RC42 most of the time as I mow a rough field and don't want to take the time or trouble to switch the RC42 and FM48 out.

The stickers on your FM48 look great!! What color did you repaint the blue on the FM48 with? I hope to get the body panels on the Terrapro I am rebuilding painted in the next month. I think the official blue color was ocean blue?? However, I have not been able to find that paint color.

The Terrapro I use currently would not start when I went to mow this week. Looks like it is getting fuel, but no spark. I took it into the shop today and they are going to look at it on Monday. I have also bought a carb kit that should be here Monday that I may get them to install while it's there.

The operators manual has a clearer picture and full directions on installing that belt. The hard part was pulling back the tensioner in the end. In my opinion the correct pitch angle of the belt is key to it's longevity. I'm going to remove that new kelvar belt and take precise measurements of it. Belt pitch, width and exact outer length. There is a margin of error on the length probably an inch or less.

The decals. I cut myself and may make another set. There is three layers of colored vinyl to create them.

The paint is nothing more than Rustoleum enamel that I custom mixed. I bought a quart of the closest color and added white till I got the shade desired. I also added a enamel hardener from TSC to speed paint drying time. Enamel takes forever to dry. If you add some hardener it changes dry to the touch in about three hours. It also adds a higher luster to the paint. You are right on the ocean blue. My next project is the RC42 then move to the TC38.

I'm currently got my second Terrapro stripped down. Found a bad rear emergency brake line and a mismatched brake drum. One wheel has the wrong rim. Speedometer cable was broke. This is the nastiest bike I've ever worked on. I took the PTO off and polished the housing. Waiting on parts right now. Guess I'll start refinishing the plastic till those parts come in.

No spark. There are multiple safety switches on it. One the seat, neutral switch, empliment safety switch, and several more. The service manual is a must owner one of these rare birds. I hope they get it fixed, and let us know what they found. I have a rebuilt Mikuni carb on Craigslist right now. Looks like new.

Thanks Robert! I have the factory service manual on PDF. I left a copy on a thumb drive with the repair shop. I think they were glad to have it...lol The carb kit came in today. I am planning on dropping it off by the shop tomorrow. I will make them aware of the safety switches. I have heard of the empliment switch causing some problems as well as people trying to switch into high gear with the PTO engaged, which will kill it.

It seemed to be surging a little last time I used it. It has always done it some, but was worse last time out. I ran it for about 10hrs mowing and bush-hogging. After I had ran it a while it smoothed out. Not sure if that could have been the carb or something else. I took the plug wire off and tried to crank it. There was no visible spark.

The is a inline fuse near the battery (red wire coming of the + post) (pulls apart) that could be blown. That might kill the ignition. I accidentally blew that fuse and the bike was dead in the water.

I used to sell these things, and I preferred the RF mower to the available brush cutter. But I didn't go through much of anything other than tall hay type grass which wasn't real thick in growth.

My friends and I were talking about the concept being reintroduced with a higher HP, liquid cooled engine. The 350cc just didn't have that much PTO hp IMO. Today's V-twins would be much better to give the HP needed.

Any chance of getting a video of these things in use?

That's possible. I have about ahalf acre that needs bush hogged. I'm curious to see how it does myself.

When I get mine back I can get a video. I have 5 acres of mainly weeds....lol that I cut with it and by the end of the week part of it should be really tall.

I prefer the RC42 bush hog to the FM48 finish mower. At least for what I do, the cut quality is pretty much the same. I don't really have grass that needs to look like a manicured lawn, but what I do cut looks the same whether it is cut with the RC42 or the FM48.

I would like to see it with a bigger engine also. I know some people have said the 10hp PTO wasn't strong enough, but I have never had any trouble with it. However, 5 or 10hp more would always be better...lol It's not like having a 35hp diesel tractor but does a great for smaller jobs. I have went through some pretty high grass and never had a problem.

I have read a couple reasons why the Terrapro was only made one year. I think maybe it was just the price. I've never seen anything in writing, but I think the Terrapro was expensive for when they were made. I think you could have gotten a nice size tractor for what you could get a Terrapro and some equipment for. With what some of these bigger ATV's cost these days, I can only imagine what a setup like the Terrapro would cost now...lol

I have a Terrapro too. I guy brought it to me to work on and I ended up buying it from him but had to put in new rings, piston, both valves, petcock, battery, and a carb kit. It runs great but it didn't come with any attachments. I've been looking for the rough cut mower for a few years now with no luck. If anyone knows of one for sale close enough to me that the shipping wouldn't be a killer I'm very interested in getting one. I did manage to get the non terrapro version of the finishing mower (RM48) at an auction. I'll probably have to mod it to get it to fit but I'm not real sure the easiest way to do that. Or I would gladly trade my mower plus money for the rough cut. If anyone has any leads please let me know.

Welcome to TractorByNet and greetings from Tennessee. I see mowers Yamaha FM48 finish mowers for sale all the time. In fact one just sold on ebay at a really good price. Now the RC42 brush cutter seems to be more in demand than the finish mower and are harding to find. Woods made a similar mower to the RC42 which didn't have the high box type cover. But only seen pictures of those.

If your speaking of the Woods three point hitch FM48 you would have to made the entire leveling frame for it to work. The easiest way that I would take would be to put high adjustable eight inch wheels on every corner to allow it to some what float behind the Terrapro. DR makes a brush cutter and a finish mower that pulls behind an ATV. You would be modifying it to a similar setup.

The works of this mower are very similar to my old Woods 48" 3pt hitch mower. It seems in pretty good condition, but you'll go through a lot of belts if you don't replace the rusted main pulleys (greaves). They're a standard size and Princess Auto sells them for about $15 each.

I put a link below to an article which explains how to install the new belt. It also lists the best source for belts I have found. From the look of this machine it will use a Woods belt, but the guys at this Belarus dealership know their stuff.

This is good info Rod. i'm sure all the Terrapro owners with FM48's will certainly appreciate this. At that price it would worth having a few spares on the shelf. I had someone contact me in New York that read about mine. He bought his Terrapro new and still uses it regularly. He broke the shift lever on the side of the transfer case that the reverse cable attaches. i happen to have a spare and mailed it to him. He told me the FM48 cost him new over $1200. I was amazed he uses it every summer and cuts five acres with it.

Then you may recall another very unusual quad made by Yamaha, the Pro-Hauler, in 1989, I believe.

Dave, I've seen pictures of the ProHauler but never seen one for sale anywhere. There was the Moto4 350 too. The Moto4 was made with different engine sizes.
