Bought my first 8n

not too bad actually. you can pull the dizzy off and work on it in your shop.

add a round coil conversion to a front mount dizzy to loose the junky square coil and ballast resistor and they ain't bad. :)
I am barely qualified to work on a side mount, but you would know 100 times more than I would regarding the front mount.
I just always heard what a pain they were

my 8N was my first tractor, and all I did with it was grade 10-11 acres of lawn, after construction, and mow with it for 3-4 years with a bush hog.

I had a blast grading my lawn, and my neighbors lawn, I moved a lot of dirt with it, over the 4-5 years I graded.

Mowing wasn't quite as much fun, creative juices do not flow as much mowing.

Personally I would not trade my 8N experience for anything, I still see 8N's and have very fond memories.

I think the no power steering was part of its charm, plus I learned very well how to use the brakes for steering :D

the nice part of the front mount is tha it comes off and goes back into time perfectly, by design.. and you can work on it at a desk. and set the point sgap and static timing ( with a ruler ).. and be just about bang on every time.

the bad part of the front mount is the crappy coil and ballast resistor arangement... that can be overcome with some replacement parts though..

If I ever get my "nostalgic 8N", that will be good to know
It truly was a fun tractor to break myself in on for :tractorin"

N are neat.. but I lost all nostalgia for them when i got my forst 00 series ford. ;)

I've always thought the N series were some of the most iconic utility tractors to ever come out of Highland Park. Look forward to your progress.

I love my Ns. They are great for some things.

That said, I'd never put a loader on one. I see better loader tractors on craigslist here everyday for less than what you could buy an 8n and a loader separately for. The front axle is just too light for any reasonable loader work.

I could literally make my 8N dance, some of the things I had done with it would make the TBN tractor police cringe and write me tickets.

But I got a lot of work accomplished with it I could not have afforded to pay heavy equipment people real money for at the time, that I did not have any spare change and like I said, I look back to those days with a very happy memory

I do agree tho, never put a loader on an 8N, if nothing else, it makes a very pretty machine look ugly

For the loader work I need it for it will be just fine. I wouldn't have one of the pipe loaders for sure. They do make them look ugly. The paulson like I am building for mine doesn't have the junky look that's the pipe loaders had.
